What about the ones who are genuinely embarrassed of their past writing's quality?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
They should realize that they are not the sole arbiters of their writing's quality? If someone liked it enough to miss it when it's gone, clearly they enjoyed it, and it seems sad to just yank it off the internet. Disavow it? Say it sucked? Sure. But I dunno. Embarrassment is a shitty reason to destroy something other people loved, even if it's your own creation.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, as far as I'm concerned a writer has every right to decide what they do and don't want to be seen in the public and they have every right to change their mind regard to it.

Perfectly valid to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I never said they didn't have the right. I just said it was a shitty thing to do. And I'm glad we have the work of poets and authors like Dickinson and Kafka, who were published posthumously because they never let their own writing see the light of day.

Personally it feels like you're just saying "...Here, I wrote this for you and since I'm not getting anything from you and I don't own you then I can take it down wherever I want. Enjoy it while it last..."

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I'm not a writer, however I do not believe the writers who give me entertainment for free owes me anything.

Isn't it a testament to your writing when you can compare the new to the old? I have over a 115 fics from my first when I was like 15 that blew chunks to my latest fic novel. Its like a badge of honor to me personally to go back and see how far I have come. I guess I figure that everyone sucks in the beginning so I'm not embarrassed.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-06-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They can do it in their own private space to do the comparison, though. What we are talking about here isn't so much about denying that those ever happened, but rather have a choice on what do go into public domain and what don't.

I know that people deal with their own old, terrible work differently. Some would keep their drawings from age of 4 with fondness, as for me I would rather not to.

But, where was anyone saying that you had to keep them up forever? I'm sorry you misunderstood me. I thought it was implied that my last comment was my opinion.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
The secret maker and a few anons, apparently.

However you are right that you didn't state that. I apologise for assuming so.

Its chill. I know how these sort of discussions can get heated.

I don't think it rude to delete, people just fade away, life situations change, etc etc, but I am wistfully sad about it. Fandom is like a community cultural project to me that has its own history and influences so as a historian wannabe, I see even the lamest Mary Sues as a tiny bit of primary documentation. Though its not my business either way.

I think I have a different view since I am dyslexic so in the beginning even the bad fics were an accomplishment at that time.

That makes lots of sense, actually. I have a somewhat similar background consider I'm an atrocious English speaker, and believe it or not I used to be even worse. One of the reasons that I'm uncomfortable with posting my writing is because I know that they are not going to be up to the standard that I'd like it to be, and I don't want to be forever "marked" as so, if that makes sense.

I get where your sadness regard to deleted fics came from, though.

I used to mirror write and get letters switched around. Fanfic helped me practice and deal with it.

I'm sure that you're a fine enough writer and folks wouldn't remember you as a bad writer. Its all about your latest fic and not your first. :)

My fandom is dying so everyday another fic is gone, a website deleted, link dying, and people fading. I was thinking about making a website for people to abandon their old static fic archives, maybe people might be interested in a website for anonymous abandoned fic.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-06-14 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
That is something I have not thought about, that's also a very, very good point.

May I ask what fandom(s) are those?

[identity profile] staringiscaring.livejournal.com 2011-06-14 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. The tie-in comics just aren't the same and Geocities going down destroyed a lot of sites and fanworks. Its just sad to go to the guild site and see all the dead archives.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-06-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely respect people wanting to delete old fics that they hate and can understand why, but I can't say I relate to it. I have fics that I find pretty cringe-worthy, but I don't think I would ever delete them.
