As for physicality, the real reason behind checking not being allowed is due to an Olympic ruling that worried women from other countries who are genetically smaller in stature wouldn't be prepared for the roughness that US/Canada was accustomed to in checking

Yeah, a lot of people forget this. Not saying whether it's true or not, but there have been a lot of complaints in hockey and even women's soccer that the North American (and European, but mostly the US and Canada teams) are much more physical than other women are accustomed to. Maybe it's because we do have a lot of female athletes that spend their early years playing on co-ed teams and that isn't the case elsewhere, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because Canada and the US have considered soccer a women's sport for the longest time so the competition is stiffer. Russia, for example, is a great hockey nation but their women's teams suck because hockey is not considered an appropriate sport for them.

I don't know if this is true, but that complaint is often forwarded: in North America girls play sports "like boys" and other nations have a different sports culture for girls, making it so they have a hard time competing with the more aggressive play of the North Americans.
