Actually, I've found this refreshing although I'm not in agreement. It's been actually nice to have a convo with someone who is not spitting venom in Aang's direction and actually acknowledges the other issues with the series and characters.

Perhaps we do hang in different circles. Lately I've seen nothing but Zuko hero-worship to the point the fans themselves have made him flawless and without reproach (almost a Gary Stu) while heaping all the issues and problems on Aang.

But Zuko didn't just exercise bad judgement - he hired a hit man, he was in part responsible for the near death of someone else she loved (after she told him the story of her mother) and all for his own wants and selfishness. He gained her forgiveness after taking her on the revenge mission. Not for the lightning. And it could be argued that it was his actions in goading Azula and not taking into full consideration that she is devious. Of course she would fire at Katara. Take out Zuko's healer and taking out Zuko might be easier.

And I did see Aang hold himself accountable - he felt bad, he beat himself up, he accepted that he had done wrong, he tried to make up for it.

Agree to disagree. :)

But like I said, it's been nice to talk to someone not spouting venom.

I think the problem of why there are such conflicting views of these characters lies in the writing being so utterly inconsistent, especially in third season. After all, these characters are not acting on their own; there is a team of writers driving them, and it seems like nobody on that team could agree on what was going on.

While Aang may beat himself up and accept what he did was wrong for a short time, but just like Zuko he turns right back around and repeats his mistakes, too (that mistake usually being "running away from having to do something he doesn't want to do"). Aesop Amnesia was rampant in this series, and nearly every character was afflicted with it at some point. And that was because, as much as I hate to admit this, a lot of the smaller subplots in the series were straight up Idiot Plots; the type that can only work if everyone involved in it leaves their brains at the door for a few episodes.

If the writers can't make up their minds about who is holding the Idiot Ball and when, it's small wonder the fans get divided right along with them.

Well, some of that division on the characters lies solely in that people can't take the shipping goggles off.

Tell me about it. I know it's not unique to ATLA, but it's like shippers in this fandom are a special breed of psycho. And while every camp has its resident nutty fringe, I have to agree with most that Zutara has the lion's share of the Kool-Aid sipping whackjobs.

I agree. Well, a lot of things added to that psycho - namely this idea that it was going to be canon. But I have never seen character creator bashing, character and situation twisting, and just nastiness on that level before. Even three years later...
