2 bits from a fan of Rock 'em, Sock 'em hockey.
The fact is, women can be strong, fit and tough and they are still not physically able to compete with men on that level. Now calm down, that's not to say that women are less, but the facts are incontrovertible, that we are different. Why do so many women feel as though they have to compete with men in order to feel valued? It's ridiculous. Women have value in and of themselves, trying to compete with men devalues that.
However, I agree with the people who say checking should allowed in women's hockey, because as it is now, it's just not as exciting to watch and that's not because the players aren't skilled. In fact, they are amazing, but it's like watching European hockey (don't mean to offend/whatever, but seriously, European hockey and Canadian hockey are completely different) all fancy stickwork and long breakaways and no gritty physical presence and no real urgency...idek, but it's totally different. Hard hits and physical play is part of how the players demand respect from each other, and there is a code that's involved there.
People may not like him, but seriously, listen to Don Cherry. That man knows his hockey more than anyone and despite him being color blind (his suits have gone downhill since Rose died. :() and a bit of an ass, he's totally right about Canadian hockey and the dilution of it. Checking and fighting are not just hot heads getting pissed off, there's more going on than the average fan sees. It's about respect and team unity and taking that out would make it a game I'd never want to watch.
If you honestly think that you can take the checking out of hockey and it will still be hockey, then you don't know hockey, nor will you. In fact, they need to let go of some of the reigns, imo.
All this talk about it's not fair that women can't play in a men's league is one thing, but has anyone ever thought that it wouldn't be fair to the men if they had to change everything about how they play to accommodate? Or does that not matter because they're, yk, men? If so it's a double standard.
That said, women would get killed playing against the men, and you can't just say, 'You can no longer play the way you've been trained to, according to code and tradition, because you might hurt the girls'.
I hope they never make co-ed teams, at least in the NHL. Hockey is, imo, the perfect sport and it's been diluted enough by people who don't understand it. Enough is enough already. Let the women develop their own code and style of play, let them decide whether or not they want to check each other. Let them develop their own game, and stop trying to push them into men's leagues. Doing so would do a disservice to both the male and female players.
