What makes Alucard interesting is his relationship with Integra. Maybe a bit his interaction with Anderson and Seras too, but mostly Integra.

Take away Integra from Alucard's life and he's just degraded to comic relief (see The Dawn).

I used to dislike him, but after he was portrayed as a huge loser who despite his powers he lost every single time when it mattered (until the current storyline and only after thirty years) and his undying loyalty/devotion/love towards Integra won me over.
