Sometimes I wonder if I even play the same games as some of the people in this fandom. Look seriously, I love submissive men, I really do. I adore them. And I don't want to be all grody about gender roles and fully realize that personality or combat role does not necessarily indicate a person's sexual preferences. Personally, I like writing/reading Fenris as a switch. But, really, OP? This is a guy who flies into violent rages and literally rips people's hearts out of their chests with his bare fist. I am not seeing where all this "zomg Fenris is ttly a bottom" stuff is coming from, except from the fact that he's a ~bishie elf~.

Flame me if you will, but this secret really bothers the shit out of me because it seems indicative of a really shallow, Laurell K Hamiliton-esque view of BDSM and what it means to be a sub. Huge amounts of trust are required in a relationship like that. I don't see Fenris being anyone's sub without loads of negotiation and character development. The man was an honest-to-god slave and has severe trust issues, and freaked the hell out at the first sign of intense intimacy with Hawke. I'm not saying a fic like that couldn't work, or that he couldn't use dominance play as a way to work out his issues. I'm not even saying that Fenris isn't capable of being vulnerable (he is, and that's why I love him so). What I'm saying is that he's a complex, multilayered character IMO and such a thing requires a fuck ton more thought and care than I see in a lot of corners of fandom. tl;dr: dude has issues and I would actually love to see them portrayed in fic for once rather than this Duo Maxwellification stuff I constantly run into.

See, this is the thing for me. I'm not saying that I think Fenris IS a sub. I'm saying I WANT to DOMINATE him. Not because he's a prettyboy elf. I never had a second thought of Zevran being bottom - He's got potential to be a switch, but as prettyboy and open to being used as he is, no, he always was ready to top my Wardens.

It's Fenris' history and control issues that make it appealing to me. Yes, I know, it's wrong, it's cruel, but it's hot. And... that's about all I can say on that. And yeah, I know, I'm not OP and you weren't arguing against me. But those are my two cents, if you want them.

tl:dr; I don't BELIEVE in sub Fenris, I WANT sub Fenris.

Agree completely. It kind of freaks me out that people would want to put Fenris in these lowly obedient positions when he suffered a good portion of his life as a slave.

Not OP. Anyone who knows me is going to know this is me, but going anon anyway.

All of what you said above is why I like him sub. For me, it's all about the potential mental dissonance in his rationally, consciously hating the idea of being dominated but finding that he loves it in a sexual sense. I like him as a sub who would never ever admit he is one, and one that would never sub to anyone he doesn't trust completely - and even afterward, run away like he does with Hawke in canon - because he hates the idea that he enjoyed himself so much, and because he hates that he likes being dominated. It's all about the issues he'd have and how he would eventually have to accept the idea and learn to differentiate between consensual non-consent and plain non-consent - which he obviously can't do in the game.

Random slave fic and collar fic, no thanks, pass on that forever. But something where it explores his actual issues and how he has to come to terms with himself, I would love to read.

I want to see what Fenris would think of everyone insisting he's a sub.
I want to see what Fenris would do when he finds out everyone is right.
I want to see Fenris hating himself for it.
Then I want to see him realizing in the end that being submissive or not is his decision and going with whatever he wants is what freedom is all about.

This. Just because "he's a sub" doesn't mean he actually has to have sex like that all the time. He could choose not to, if it makes him unhappy.

Not that it can't be explored, like you said. But the fact that he's often submissive by default is unfathomable to me.

See, while I agree with most of what you said I can see Fenris being submissive sexually because it's the only thing he knows. There's a line in the game which I don't think you get unless you have romanced him, Danarius' one about him being talented. (I could be wrong the only time I didn't romance him was on my first play through and have been unable to not romance him since...I am a fangirl and I admit it) so that leads me to think he might have been abused sexually as a slave so being submissive in sexual encounters would be all he knew how to do and while I don't think he would be fully submissive I do think he would be more focused on pleasing his partner and what they want then taking the lead himself. Even in the scene in A Bitter Pill when Fenris and Hawke kiss for the first time its Hawke who does the grabbing and pins him against the wall while he just kinda holds on.

isn't there a version where Fenris does the pushing?

Hmmm...Hawke grabs his arm and he pushes them against the wall and they have 'a moment' but he steps back out of that and Hawke pounces on him. I don't see that as an intimate action initially since its pretty much canon he doesn't like to be touched but an automatic gut raction that usually results in him ripping out peoples vital organs, but YMMV

And I didn't mean to imply he'd want to be submissive just that he would be more cautious due to learned behaviour, since being pushy in such a way with a master if you're a slave would probably get you punished. He does imply that he's not been with many people (if any) since his escape so it would probably be difficult to beak himself of that behaviour or change it if not given the opportunity

I can see Fenris as being utterly passive during his time serving Danarius (and assume it included sexual service as well, either to Danarius or his guests) but submissive? No, not while he was Fenris. Perhaps before when he was Leto.

See, that's what makes it so hot, the contrast between being aggressive generally and submissive in the bedroom; putting up a macho attitude but privately letting it all down. I may or may not have a huge kink for seeing aggressive types humiliated. >.>;; And the trust issues are like half the point. :P

Then again I like Shepard super submissive, too, and most of the fandom tends to see her as a total dom.
