Oh Warriors. I love the first series to pieces, am willing to ignore the grammar and spelling errors and calling Tigerclaw Tigerpaw, of all things, but god, were the series after that painful to read. I managed to finish the second series, but the third one fell way too flat to bother to continue. And almost no one died despite all the fighting, urgh.

Didn't they change one cat's sex too? I think my friend pointed it out.

The lack of death would seem like an odd thing to complain about with any other series but I so totally agree. What really drove me crazy was the battle where Squirrelflight was almost killed but made a miracle recovery. I know she was needed later on for the reveal that the main trio of kits weren't hers but Leafpool's, I still think she should have been killed off.

And they've shanged many cats genders many many times.

In the first series they had absolutely no problem killing cats off, so it was just really jarring that in the third series almost no cats died *in the books I managed to slog through that is* I think the second series did a little better job of that at least.

I probably didn't notice then. I just remember my friend laughing at one cat that had been male and then was declared pregnant in another book. That was just one problem among so many for Warriors though.

I once did a tally of cats in the books. At least three or four have changed gender, and somewhere between the first and third series, over twenty cats disappeared without explanation.

You would think with all the people writing the stories and working together they would be able to hash stuff out better like this, but I guess not.

I'm actually inclined to think the opposite. It's hard enough to keep track of a canon when you're the only one working on it, I can only imagine how bad it is when you have at least four people writing the same series...

I don't know, I see it as them being able to turn to their other workers and ask questions and have notes up the yin-yang but maybe I'm being naive. I don't exactly work in large groups, especially not when it comes to writing. But I suppose it could really go either way.

As a Translation student, the first thing I learned (when reading my entrance exam books, no less) was that no human communication is perfect. No matter how many notes you have, how many conversations you have about something, some sort of information is gonna be omitted. ...and with the pace they push the Warriors books are pushed out, I'm willing to bet they don't spend nearly enough time on checking for things like consistency.

...also I get the feeling the authors Just Do Not Care. I mean, they got feedback on the whole calico toms thing when they made Redtail, then they retconned him to be another color, and then they made ANOTHER calico tom (Sol, whom they also retconned in the next book).

This is true. I am glad that I work on my fanfiction alone.

I keep forgetting that the cats are calico since they call them tortoiseshell. I'd never heard that word applied to cats until I started the series actually, so I usually have to stop and think about it. But yeah, calico toms are rare for a reason writers...

Ah, there's a difference between torties and calicos, and I actually flubbed there - Redtail was a tortie tom, Sol was a calico. Calicos are torties with white on them somewhere. Usually, it manifests as a white cat with red and black patches.

I disagree. There are two authors writing the series (they alternate books) plus the editor who appears to be in charge of the overall storyline. It would not be hard at all to type up a character guide of the cats who appear in the series, especially since one must be typed up for the start of each book.

I could forgive a few mistakes here and there but the huge number of mistakes is too many to ignore. Cats changing gender, color, names, and the like.

If fans take time out of their lives to make lists of all the mistakes, you would think the writers and editors could put a little more effort into their stories.

I can forgive some slight errors. Maybe even one major one; I was annoyed at the author who wrote about a character losing an arm in one book and forgot about it when she wrote the next book, but it wasn't a wallbanger. But THAT many inconsistencies? o.O

Last time I checked, there were three main authors - original authors Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry, and later addition Tui Sutherland - as well as their editor Victoria Holmes, who apparently now writes chunks of the books as well. So in essence, I consider the series to have four authors.

The fandom has the free time to put in crowd-sourced research on cats. I mean, I updated the Warriors Wiki once or twice with info, but it was very small things. When you have thousands of people, usually kids with a lot of spare time, it's easy to get information gathered. I doubt the authors could predict just how big the series would get, and when they realized they don't have notes on the early books, a snowball effect was created.

It takes me maybe 24hours tops to read one of these Warriors books. I don't think it would be difficult at all to reread the books (or get some intern to do it) and keep a guide of the cats.

If they wanted to make a large cast of characters, then they should have been prepared to take on the task of managing that cast and keeping all of the characters straight.

Warriors is one of those book series where I love the setting and hate the books. Give me a good Warriors RP and I'm happy, but I haven't been able to read the books since... I think I have the first two books of Power of Three, but they were just such tripe that I couldn't continue. I couldn't see the point of the plot anymore and hated all the stupid names that were popping up. (Kinkfur. Kinkfur. Are you kidding me.)

I agree with the stupid name issue. The two authors and the editor were once interviewed in saying (around the time the first series was coming out) that they would never use names starting with 'sun' or 'moon' because they were considered sacred to the cats. Now they've used 'sun' and 'moon' in names several times!

I hated that they went back on that interview because I quite agreed that the sun and moon were important symbols to the cats and shouldn't be used as names.

Warriors RPs are fun as heck, but the series just went downhill completely after the first series. I don't even take the prequels with old characters as canon...

My favorite books are actually the spinoff books. I have the first two (Firestar's Quest and Bluestar's Prophecy), and maybe because they are longer books, they felt significantly better written and were actually entertaining. The only thing I didn't like about the former was the ridiculous names Firestar ended up giving in the book...

I wish I could find a fun Warriors RP that fulfills my requirements. I found a good one a while ago, but it was kind of inactive and I didn't really feel included, so I left.

Damn, every time I read something like this, it reminds me of what a bad fan I am. Despite having read every book of every series (maybe except the latest one), I didn't notice any of the flaws everyone else points out *facepalm*

To be fair, the cast is huge, and it's rather hard to distinguish between different cats. Still, most of the mistakes are just pure laziness.

Oh God yes. The first series was wonderful, the second series was acceptable, and then it all went to hell. Did they really forget who died, though?

Heavystep has died three times. About twenty cats have disappeared without trace over the course of the books, most of them WindClan cats who were mentioned in the rosters in one or more books and then never mentioned again.

I once spent a half hour internally ranting to myself about how badly the series has fallen.

I'm calling cooks and broth on this one. All the writers that don't bother to look over the canon and figure out who is what and when is where. It ends up becomign a complete mess. I stopped caring at book two of arc four.

But seriously, all the mistakes. Like the rather infamous transRowanclaw incident, and Heavystep dying three. Different. Times. The Hunter ladies really need to take notes or something.

Damn it all, I know writing a series like this and keeping everything in place is hard, but when the FANS have a deeper, firmer idea of the laws of your canon than you do, you've got some serious issues!

I totally loved this series when I was a middle schooler. Well, until Blue Star died. Things felt kind of bland after that point.
