Mine are sorted by what made me save them: "funny", "pretty", "spot-on", "fandom".

I save them with the name of the livejournal user. Sometimes I go through their icons list to see if they were credited, to save them with the name of the creator.

I'm pretty sure everyone at least occasionally saves images for their own personal use. It's really only "stealing" when you start redistributing things without credit.

Omg. I totally do this. And sometimes, when it's a really, really good one- I post it to Facebook or text them to my friend for laughs. My friends love it. :) plus, it allows me to let my nerdiness show.

Don't know if you wanted a how-to, but for what it's worth, most people credit in their icon keywords/comments, on the Manage Userpics (http://www.livejournal.com/editpics.bml) page. Just a "made by [name goes here]", usually.

But yeah, you're not alone. Losing my 'silly icons' folder hurt almost more than losing my 'art I made' folder when my HD exploded back then...
