That doesn't mean it shouldn't. I don't think it should have to be the two characters people are pairing up, but it'd be great if there was a gay character in canon, for a partner to be introduced for them, like how Blaine was created to date Kurt in Glee. It's unlikely, but I'd like to see it happen more often.

Regarding your second point, that's because most media is filled with characters who are either straight, or who don't seem to show any sexuality while not being overtly asexual (since most people assume characters like that are straight). There aren't a lot of canon gay couples, though some of the ones that are out there, like Jack/Ianto, Brian/Justin, or Blaine/Kurt, have very loyal and large fanbases.

Gay characters would be great overall, yes--but a show wouldn't really have a reason to bring it up unless it was going the relationship route, and it's the relationship that doesn't appeal to mainstream audiences usually (I'm working off of past television, here.) The canon gay couples that do exist fill what is pretty much a niche--shows about high school and self-discovery, shows about the gay community, shows about THAT CRAZY PANSEXUAL JACK. It's the other shows that need more gay representation, because let's face it: fandom support does not equal actual support, and the casual viewers tend not to be quite as invested, or aware.

I'm not quite sure what this has to do with my comment or the one I was replying to, but I agree for the most part. I think that in general, straight couples really dominate the media, and fandom doesn't reflect what the majority of the viewers are thinking.

I would hesitate to call Glee a niche show, however. It's a huge, mainstream hit, and aside from the musical numbers it's a pretty typical teen drama. I think TV is starting to become more open to gay couples in hit mainstream shows though, with Glee and Modern Family as the two prime examples. It's not quite there yet, but I think things are getting better.

Grey's Anatomy is pretty mainstream and just had a lesbian marriage. It's a very popular couple even outside of fandom. So there's some hope!
