Notes:

Sorry it's late. Half of tinypic being down = I have to go through manually and replace the ones that aren't working. Hopefully it'll be back by tomorrow

I just can't picture any TV writer thinking of--or, okay, that's unfair, more like, any TV writer getting a story approved where a character formerly assumed to be straights starts falling in love with someone of their own gender.

Well, to be fair it does happen occasionally (Willow on Buffy, and I'm pretty sure we didn't originally know Callie was bi on Grey's Anatomy). But something notable about the rare times this does happen is that they are on shows that have a lot of focus on relationship to begin with -- not the action/adventure/cop types shows, you know?

Oh man, I can't believe I forgot about Willow. I loved Tara <3

But, point, I shouldn't be making blanket statements, as I don't watch everything, of course :P

So yeah I guess soaps/dramas do accommodate that more often, and for sure they do have that framework that could allow it better too, so much more character study. I think bigger casts also can allow the opportunity.

On a show like Supernatural, which is both actiony and hella melodramatic, you have two guys, eventually three, sort of, and there's not much likelihood of shaking up the status quo regarding any of them, even if either one of the brothers could have been like "oh well I guess I'm bi" or something on the way and some of his past conquests that reappear are dudes, I think the PTB of a show with a tiny cast feel they risk losing a massive chunk of audience if they don't have enough other characters to buffer against such an apparently shocking change.

Btw, I love your icon. And now I have Somewhere Out There in my head...

Aw, thanks! They are :hearts;! Somewhere Out There is amazing.

Anyway, I think that's a really good point about cast size. I think it's much more plausible that a show might decide to make a secondary character in a largish cast come out even if that's not what they originally intended than a protagonist -- as you say, less fear of alienating the audience.

I'd like to think that we're not TOO far off from having a show like Supernatural where one of the characters is gay on American network TV, but to have a character who wasn't originally written that way to come out on a show like that? Less likely.

Apparently it was hinted in a panel with Jared at some con that Sam's bi? But I can't see it ever being relevant on the show so it probably won't be a Big Deal outside fandom anyway :/
