Sadly, yes there are. And no, it's not limited to private colleges. I'm enrolled at a public institution and noticed a while back that it was included on the reading list for a class. And my cousin had to read it for a class community college in a different state.

I absolutely agree with your comment though. I may not rage over the books but I've tried reading one on three separate occasions and found it to be utterly devoid of literary merit. Not to mention boring.

One of Stephenie Meyer's flaws is her prose sucks... So, I'm not sure why any colleges would have it on their reading list. Some of the ideas have potential though, but you really have to get past her writing which can be difficult at times. :/

This was exactly my problem. I didn't have any issue with her ideas, but I'm very sensitive to language and the prose just killed me.

So, I'm not sure why any colleges would have it on their reading list.

Because the books have been a huge cultural phenomenon and academics and students would like to study them to see how, exactly, they tapped into popular imagination?

If that's the case I think Harry Potter would be a better study as it's a bigger cultural phenomenon and is written better. There really isn't a secret to why Twilight is popular. It had a following before the movies which consisted of mostly people who liked vampire fluff. Nothing new there. After the movies it's the typical "omgatz x is soooo hawt!" :/
