Someone I've known since he was in kindergarten (I'm a couple years older) recently transitioned and it is a constant battle not to use "she" because I've had a good 15+ years of using that pronoun and it's really hard to break a habit that old. Luckily he's pretty cool about it and knows that it's not meant to be offensive, just brain farts. Sometimes it's just really hard!

Plus, in this case, using the genetic sex puts a lot of the early stuff into context, I'd say.

It can be very hard! But my friend is really great about it too; I think he realizes that I'm trying my hardest, and that I'll always be his friend, regardless of gender or pronoun. I'm sure it's the same with yours =] Sooner or later, we'll get it drilled in properly ;D

Oh yeah, definitely. My friend doesn't mind at all when people refer to him as "she" when talking about stuff from pre-transition, since at that time, he WAS still a "she". Generally, though, I just use his name when talking about the past in the 3rd person. (Or, his nickname, anyway; his birth name is fairly feminine; he chose a different one when going through transition, which I like quite a bit, but I pretty much always use his nickname, which is gender neutral and pretty much synonymous with him these days anyway XD)

(Mine was nowhere near as cool =/ I can't type Cyrillic, Capcha! Nor can I type upside down!!!)
