I don't like Rose, yet I've found myself on several occasions defending her for those exact reasons (that she does have her merits and has had brilliant moments)
It's perfectly okay to simply not like a character without going on a ridiculous rant "justifying" it. (This secret would've been fine with "I didn't like this episode, I didn't like Jenny, I wish Martha played a bigger role.")
If you (universal you) can't find anything at all likeable about a character, the answer is simple: stop watching them and OMG stop investing time getting your hate on 'cause you're just pissing off the people who love 'em
