I don't get it either. How is he a stereotype of an Asian bloke? He's flawed in many ways, but none of which scream "typically Asian" if there is such a thing, to me.

There's a stereotype that Asians make bad Spanish teachers...?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-17 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't think annoyingly-manic psychotic spanish professor/pathetic divorcée is an Asian stereotype :?

I have thought every now and then he gets close to the 'old perverted Asian man' deal with a crude sexual comment, but even that isn't that often.

Is "hard ass disciplinarian" "crazy mentor" not an official Asian stereotype yet?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-17 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"hard ass disciplinarian"? In what universe does that applies to Chang? His idea of discipline is completely insane and illogical. I wouldn't say he was anything like a mentor, either, they clearly don't respect him in any way.

The "insane and illogical" would be the synonym for "hard ass", by American standards. And a "crazy mentor" may not be respected by those he is attempting to mentor. Also usually tied into the "perverted creep" stereotype. So yeah he scores a lot of bingo points to me. But as someone said upthread -- it's one of the tamer roles he's done.

He's not remotely a mentor. There is absolutely no evidence that he wants or tries to be a mentor. The single bonding scene we had in S1 was Jeff and Chang going out drinking and partying as equals, and Jeff was almost a mentor to him. All of s1 he's on a power trip, the entire class is run by his insane and flakey whims. He doesn't attempt to give special attention to anyone, to create anything that resembles a mentoring relationship AT ALL. There's not even a parody of a mentor relationship going on. In fact, when they DID want to parody that, they created a whole new character.

"Insane and illogical" is NOT a synonym for "hard ass" in any way that leaves an actual definition for the idea of "hard ass." He's only strict when he's frustrated and wants to take it out on other people, and that was pretty rare. We saw that the entire class was way behind on the curriculum because foremost he's lazy and ill-prepared, and he doesn't push his students or set standards at all. None of this speaks to Asian stereotypes. Or even the definition "hard ass."

Chang is a very unpleasant character but it's in a pretty freaking unique way.

Alright I've been thinking about this all day.

I think there's an argument for an element of othering when it comes to Chang. He's creepy, weird and slimy. But I think if anything, it's othering of mentally unhealthy people, not Asians. Chang isn't creepy because he's Asian, he's creepy because he has no self-awareness. He's creepy because he's willing to climb through vents in his underwear to fight a monkey, which is really not an Asian stereotype. So, I don't know, if you're saying he's dehumanized to a degree, I agree with that, and it's more than anyone else in the cast gets, even more than the Dean. He is like a cartoon character kind of shoved in a cast of real people. But . . yeah none of his otherness comes from being Asian, imo.

IDK, I guess the way they portray him reminds me of how other Asians have been portrayed by the American media, whether it's an "official" Asian stereotype or not. Sixteen Candles or American Pie for a couple.
