I'm the same way, especially about the theater vs at home thing. I almost HAVE to see a movie in theater if I want to see it, or I'll try to do something else and pay attention to the movie and fifteen minutes in I'll have NO FUCKING CLUE what's going on anymore.

I don't take Ritalin (I take Vyvanse, which is much lower intensity I hear, so obviously I have less to babble about, yet more words seem to keep forming) but I understand how that goes. I feel that with books-- which I used to love-- it gets really hard to remember what happened a few chapters back if I don't try to read it cover to cover. Only a few exceptions, and shorter books are usually easier obvs. I don't like saying that, though, because it makes me feel dumb (and I'm really not dumb, I don't think) like I can't read. I can, and I love learning new stuff and experiencing the joy of books, but it's just SO DAMN HARD to pay attention for more than about an hour-hour and a half on one thing, and if I'm having a bad day I can't concentrate at all.

Sorry I was so verbose, but basically I just wanted to say I understand, OP. Sometimes some people just can't do some things the same way other some people can.

And that is alright.
