People who get so offended by Family Guy are the same people who don't find the humour in Seinfeld. You have to be somewhat of an insightful person to really enjoy either show.

Except, you can be a total idiot to enjoy Family Guy, too. It's a pretty good show, I think. I like the way Seth MacFarlane holds a mirror to society to show it how haggard it is through his show, but there's some toilet humour in there that anyone with half a brain would giggle like a schoolgirl at.

I feel your pain OP.
I lucked out and had never read the HTTYD books so I got to enjoy the awesome film for what it was, but there are SO MANY great movies that have been ruined for me by having read the books first. My childhood was full of amazing literature but I'm still a wee bit resentful. Now I deliberately DON'T read the books if they're popular enough to get a movie deal, just in case the film turns out good. (And then I read the books afterward!) That's what I'm doing with Game of Thrones, for example.

Anyway I think you'll find a LOT of people cared waaaay too much about the HTTYD books when the movie splashed on the scene. I distinctly remember great big piles of wank everywhere. I'm sure somebody can dig up the links if you think reading the bitching would be cathartic for you. :P
