In earlier series he was presented more "a prick, but his heart's in the right place" and they've just slip-slided him into "massive bastard". I kind of wish they'd do a plot of Lois actually properly leaving him :/

It's kind of the inevitable end-point when these type of shows go on too long. Same thing happened with Homer on the Simpsons, with the movie culminating in Marge actually leaving him for a brief amount of time. The season of the Simpsons AFTER the movie was a brutal, painful experience wherein it became increasingly awful the things Homer did with Marge actually seriously wondering why she stuck with him.

Really, the 'dumb fat husband who fucks up a lot but has good intentions + the hot, clever and infinitely patient wife' trope can only be pulled for so until their own characterizations call for the wife, if she is as clever as written, to wonder why she's with the guy. That's why these shows shouldn't go on as long as they do.
