Actually, I HAVE seen that. A lot in the main comms on LJ. That to be a devoted fan one must watch and absorb everything or you're an upstart with no validity of opinion.

And how do you read all 40 years worth of canon for Spiderman? There are different verses for different things. Movie!Spidey isn't the same as OMD!Spidey or Anime!Spidey. One can be a fan of one without the other.

For instance, you can just like the Buffy movie and consider yourself a Buffy fan...while avoiding the series and spin-offs. It's essentially the same split for Old and NuWho because there was a major change in production and focus between the years off-air. Similarly, movie!Buffy was way more Valley Girl, kept a lot of her shallowness amid the changes, and more comical snarky in speech. Whereas TV!Buffy is far more pointed snarky, prone to bouts of depression/sadness/reflection over choices and pretty much created her own speech pattern among friends. They're the same character on paper (unwilling teenage vampire hunter) but the focus is different.

One can like one or the other and still be a fan, just like with Who. You can like the more companion focused on your experience with Nu while not wanting all the bouncing and storyline dictation of Classic Who. And I've watched a bit of Classic. I don't care for it nearly as much as Nu because I'm not as invested in the characters. It doesn't make me less of fan than someone who has no desire to watch Old Who after listening to the classic fans describe arcs ad nauseum in order to put Nufans in their place..

The snobbery is outstanding in the fandom and your comment illustrates why. There is no one right way to be fan. Otherwise there would be no discussions since everyone would like the exact same thing for the exact same reason, making a stagnant fandom.

"For instance, you can just like the Buffy movie and consider yourself a Buffy fan..."
No. You can't. You can only consider yourself Buffy-the-movie fan, and if you try debating with any of a Buffy-the-TV-show fans... well, let's just say it won't work, shall we?

Look, imagine you really like impressionism, but you're only into Austrian painters, don't care much for a French line, and have no idea who Monet or Renoir are. Does this make you like the genre less? Nope. Does it make you less compitent? Yup.

Call it snobbery, but how's fandom different?

Actually, some people DO just consider themselves a fan with the movie and don't care for the darker tones of TV show. And like the Who fandom, there are communities for both subsets and a main community. And for the record? I was in Buffy fandom for approximately three years, so I'm not as ignorant as you'd like me to be.

But clearly, you're more interested in being right without comprehending the comparisons. Big words must be scary since you can't spell them right.

As for Impressionism, I actually am versed in that and only like Manet because he was the only one I truly knew the name of for a long time. I hate Monet and Renoir. Water lilies do nothing for me. But good try at attempting to sound superior.

Wow, your reading comprehension is just...special, isn't it? I just said that snobbery WAS outstanding fandom. What, the lack of Cliff Notes confused you?
