But, see, they are lesser fans of Doctor Who. Maybe not lesser fans of a part of Doctor Who, but overall Doctor Who? - yes, lesser fans.
I mean, wouldn't someone who's only seen the last season of Buffy and has no interest or intention to see the rest, and also maybe considers the rest stupid and unwatchable be a lesser fan than someone who has seen and enjoyed it all? They wouldn't be a lesser fan of the last season of Buffy, but they definitely would be a lesser fan of the show at large.
It's just the fact that new!Who fans consider "Doctor Who" to mean "new Doctor Who" that's blurring this obvious fact.

I do, however, agree that all opinions should be evaluated on their own merit, not given value based on how big a fan the person expressing them is.

I just consider the idea of "lesser fans" distasteful in general. It's not a contest, it's all in good fun, and no one should have to proclaim their inferiority for liking some parts of the vast DW universe but not others. If some fans of the reboot feel that way, or feel like they're missing out and use that to stoke an interest in classic Who, good for them, but "knowing your place" in some bullshit fan hierarchy shouldn't be a requirement to participate.

IDK, maybe it's just because my last fandom was a huge and intimidating book with five billion adaptations and bits of supplemental canon, and I got really sick of the wank over whose fan!cock was bigger and when it was appropriate to point out that something contradicted book canon and whether those of us who liked to geek out about the book were all bitter elitists. And now I get into Who fandom and it's the same wank with the added weight of forty years' worth of festering bitterness, and I'm just sick of it. It's bad manners for fans of the new series to insult the pacing or production values or style of the old and whine about how the classic Who fans are oppressive elitists, it's bad manners for fans of the old series to moan about how the reboot is raping their childhood and its fans are all tasteless idiots, but if one or the other is just honestly not up your alley, you don't lose Fan Points for not watching it.

You know, I actually agree.
That grading of fans is ridiculous, I just meant that most of those people are lesser fans by their own definition of a good fan, you know? It's just the inconsistency of most people claiming one definition of a "good fan", and then refusing to place themselves on the right place on their own scale of 'goodness' of a fan that's a pet peeve of mine.
As far as the whole concept of "good fan" goes, ideally I'd have it abolished all together.

(I don't even know why I'm discussing this - I'm not even in DW fandom, so I'm hardly the best stanfan myself)
