I've done that. And actually when I did, I seemed to wind up getting into the fandom later and NOT being into the pairing at all - I read a Big Bang Theory fic once that was Sheldon/Penny and liked it a lot, but now that I watch it that's like my ANTIotp (I love them as friends but do not see more happening ever), and I read some Wincest before I got into Supernatural because I had a friend who was into it and kept reccing filthy porn. So I read it. Now I watch it, and Dean & Sam actually remind me a lot in a weird way of me and my brother, so I can't ship it. and then Castiel came along and I was shipping him and Dean without even meaning to. Funny how this turns out.

so yeah, do it up! But be prepared, the fic-versions might not hit you the way the source material does.
