Psssst... it is. And you should.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-06-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Rude.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Homestuck is just the Hated Thing Du Jour, anon. Give it a year or two and fandom at large will find something new to hate and forget about Homestuck.

In the meeanwhile, haters gonna hate. Just like what you like and fuck what anyone has to say about it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
You don't need to "prove your worth" as a person or whatever just because of one fandom. It's probably not worth even trying here because of all the trolls, (irony? :D ... well, idk) but generally, people shouldn't be dicks about what you like. And if they are, the problem is with them.

Homestuck isn't alone here either, there are tonnes of shows that people apparently judge others for liking- pretty much anything that's widely popular actually.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on how you act around others who don't like it. I've got bros who love it that haven't changed at all, and it's fine.

...Apparently, it changes some friendships for the worst though, or so I gathered from past secrets here.

[identity profile] hallieface.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Outsider here. Don't really care either way about Homestuck or its fandom. I'm sure you're a pretty cool person.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who's been in the MSPA fandom since before Homestuck even started, I can pretty unequivocally say that not only outsiders hate you. In fact, the most unrelenting vitriol comes from ex-fans and fandom expatriates.

And they're mostly right. This fandom is awful.

[identity profile] aoi-hikari-ai.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
You know... I was kinda head tilting at Homestruck recently. I just didn't get the appeal. However, two or three good friends of mine seemed to really enjoy it, and listening to how passionate they were about it, and also knowing they can get just as passionate about things we all mutually like-- I really can't dislike it. It's just not my cup of tea, but that's okay and doesn't make it less worthwhile.

I don't see it as inherently bad though-- no worse then a lot of fandoms get. Some fandoms do get more concentrated crazy fans (or atleast, very loud outspoken ones) but if people can enjoy it and find happiness in it, I don't see what the problem is.

So know atleast this random person on the internet won't judge you, anon. :D Just enjoy yourself, and if people really judge you that much on one of your fandoms? I don't think they're really always worth being friends with in the first place.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I don't have time to hate on Homestuck, I'm still in Haters Anonymous from Trek v. Jedi, emacs v. vi, Macintosh v. everyone, and Old v. New Who. But have fun with it kids.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
...Trek vs. Jedi? o.O

One might as well compare Babylon 5 and Cylons, because the equality there makes about as much sense.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? Trekkies vs. Jedi was once the big thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
...Do you mean Star Trek vs. Star Wars? Because otherwise you're comparing one entire franchise to an aspect of another, which makes no sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
see my problem is I like the comic, just hate the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much this.
I almost feel guilty for liking it sometimes.
(but then I remember that it really is awesome and worth loving)

Although I kind of miss the days when finding something Homestuck related somewhere on the web was a pleasant and uncommon surprise. I feel like a douchey hipster when I say that the fandom was a lot better before it got uber mega popular.

But hey, dats da truth

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
One of my best friends is a HUGE Homestuck fan and has definitely fangirled about it in front of me, but I don't think worse of her for it. I have no idea about much of it, but hey, it's not my cup of tea. Obsessive internet fans definitely make things less desirable, but that doesn't change the original object of the fandom or people who like it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
it's the new Hetalia, fandom-wise

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, true that, right down to the "you like it, you must be a pedo" like how all Hetalia fans are supposed to be genocide apologists or something *eyeroll*

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Hetalia fan so I know how you feel.

Don't worry, as long as it makes you happy, it doesn't matter what others think.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what other people are saying here is correct-- don't feel bad about your fandom. It's okay to like what other people don't like!

But that said... one of the reasons I personally am starting to feel a bit surly towards Homestuck is because of exactly the kind of mindset you say you're developing-- that you're afraid of talking to anybody not in the fandom.

Friends of mine who I thought I was really close to now no longer even give me the time of day unless A) Something funny happened in the Homestuck fandom and B) None of their Homestuck fans are online to talk to. Any and all conversations with them, when they happen at all (which is getting rarer and rarer as time goes on), automatically gravitate towards Homestuck, no matter how many times I say that I haven't read the comics and am not particularly interested in them. It is literally the only thing they are interested in talking about. I've been reduced to nothing but a cardboard cutout for them to squee at (not 'to', 'at') on occasion as a last resort, even though they know I have no idea what they're talking about. It kind of hurts, and it makes people feel resentful.

Don't be one of those people. If you withdraw into a fandom shell and just plain old not talk to anyone who's not interested in what you're interested in, even if it's because you're really just scared of being judged, it can and WILL make otherwise accepting, friendly people who might care about you think that you're just another raving fan, the kind that everyone seems to think the Homestuck fandom is made of entirely. Most people don't care if their pal is into something they think is silly or boring-- they only care if that's the only thing their pal ever seems to think or talk about.

Just talk to people. Unless you're one of the people who can't go for five minutes without talking about Homestuck even if the person you're talking to has never read it and doesn't want to (in which case I guess you'd probably BE happier just cutting off all contact with anyone not in the fandom), it's not like anyone's going to whip out their pitchfork at you for liking something they're not interested in. And if they DO judge you for being into a webcomic they don't like, they're not worth your time anyway.

[identity profile] ivavros.livejournal.com 2011-06-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I get the feeling. I've felt pretty ashamed after getting into it because obviously we're all obviously horrible, ill, sick people.

Bluh.
