I don't think it is random. Seth MacFarlane is aiming to offend people, and what better way to do so than to throw in a gay character in the show? It's gross.

See this is what I'm saying. You're the bonus I was talking about earlier.

I have no doubt Seth does throw stuff in the show to intentionally offend people, but it would be aimed at a certain group of people.

For example: almost as soon as Seth found out Stewie was the most popular character in the show, he turned him gay. If you're a fan of Seth and follow him like I do, then I think it's obvious that that speaks volumes of his humour (and also, obviously, the humour of the show). People hate homosexuals. They actually hate gay people. Seth finds that fucking ridiculous, disgusting, just sad, and he's all for gay rights, so now we have Family Guy's most popular character homosexual. I wish I could really dig into the humour and break it down so you can see Seth isn't the douche every female on LJ practically wants him to be, but it's really not something you can put into words.

Or maybe you can and I just need to expand my vocabulary.

This comment is fantastic and I believe you are entirely accurate about Seth's sense of humor and how he deploys it.

For me, I've never really been able to get into The Family Guy (the humor is totally not for me) and sure, there are times it really does cross lines and becomes truly offensive... but I've heard interviews with Seth MacFarlane and he comes off as a really genuine, sweet person who actually does care about progressive issues. I like him.

I never would have guessed he was all for gay rights.

Perfection in this comment.

I really DO believe that's the aim of the sexist/racist/homophobic/etc jokes on Family Guy, but I still find the show offensive.
Because sometimes, it's just gross. Like, actually gross. People being cut in half and puking everywhere and whatnot.

I want to watch it, but I have too weak a stomach anymore, or the show has gotten grosser, one of the two.

[identity profile] a-better-thing.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
See, I completely understand you here - I tend to think that shows like FG, AD, SP are all much of a muchness in the sense that they show hugely offensive behaviour/tropes with the intention of highlighting how completely not ok it is to think those things. If you take SP, for example, the majority of the time it's Cartman who says and does the most hateful, offensive things, and he's certainly not being held up as a paragon of virtue or an example to be followed.

There are, obviously, a lot of problematic things in all these shows that do make me uncomfortable when I see them, but in all honesty no tv show is 100% offence-free, and I don't really expect them to be. And there's always the switch-off option if I come across something that is too squicky for me to deal with.

Considering Seth actually supports gay-related causes, I doubt he means it to be gross.

You know, aside from the fact it's not.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Amidst the guy who farts on his daughter's face and the dog that makes out with people, the gay baby is oh so gross.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I'm queer myself, but the BABY being gay kind of freaks me out because it's a goddamn BABY. It goes too much into creepy pedo territory, especially now that he's fairly mincing. And oh good he's into the dog too, which is going to make all those people who think the allowing gays around is a road to beastiality really have a think.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That sort of squick I can understand and somewhat agree. But for me that as a squick of sexualized babies in general rather than a gay baby. In the early episodes he flirted with grown women and even did this sexy dance for cheerleader girls.

The comments about this behavior being gross only came out when he started acting this way towards the same sex tough, and that I can't agree with.
