Word. Everyone raves about this show and I keep being tempted to give it a watch. But the whole overly masculine vibe I get from it really is a turn-off. :-/

Though if Buffy did appear in it (and just as a badass heroine) then I'd tune it straight away. ^_^

Don't let people oversell you on the show, particularly if you're a feminist, it is one of those shows where occasionally you need to turn your brain off because it's really not a female empowerment type of show.

I like it because I love Supernatural themes and the show doesn't take itself too seriously, I in turn don't take it that seriously but it can be addicting as hell and a lot of fun to watch.

It's really just something you need to see and judge for yourself.

Thanks for the honest encouragement. :)

It's not like I'm unable to watch a show with a predominantly male cast. Hell, I love Red Dwarf for starters and it only started to suck when a woman was added to the main cast (though that's more to do with the type of show it was and how that just didn't work). But it's mainly shows with a lot of action where men do most of the fighting and heroic deeds while women are either damsels in distress or love interests (or both) that put me off a lot.

But hey; I love supernatural shows and good to know it doesn't take itself too seriously - something which I really would not have got from all the media and advertising with the whole "badass stoic manly men in leather and trenchcoats" imagery. Will teach me not to judge a book by its cover. ;)

I'm with you on a lot of that, but heck some of the Supernatural females actually were kickass, the main reason it gets a lot of slack is because females just don't tend to LAST on the show (and it also does fall into the love interest trope a lot, which I'm not a fan of) but if you view the show for what it is- a story about two brothers, then females not playing a major part starts to not feel as bothersome.

And I wouldn't call it too manly either, a lot of the story is about Dean and Sam and just how many EMOTIONS they have. That's actually, outside of the supernatural aspects, what drew me to the show- I like stories about tight family bonds.

I'm not against hypermasculine vibes, but I'll admit that the treatment of the lady characters is what keeps me from watching the show. :\

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
So if you don't watch the show how do you know about the treament to the ladies?

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Because while I don't watch the show myself, I go on FS daily and read all the threads about it, I have a large number of friends who are big fans and they talk about it with me, show me things related to the fandom, etc, and I have friends who do episode reviews on their LJs and I read those sometimes. I've also watched an episode or two at said friends' behest.

I'm fairly exposed to SPN fandom and I know a reasonable amount about the show, its plot, and many of the characters, but honestly, that's enough for me. I have no desire to sink a large portion of my time into watching six seasons of a show I only care passively about due to friends liking it, that has a record of bombing with female characters in one way or another. Quality of lady characters is incredibly important to me, and if I know going in that a show is lacking, welp. Chances are that will keep me from going in particularly far.

You know something, I'm exactly like you. Quality female characters play a big role for me in liking a show. However in the case of Supernatural I make an exception because even though it doesn't include females in the action, it also doesn't marginalize them as the girl-at-home or slut-in-the-bar. Going into season one that was my biggest fear: that this show was about two brothers kicking demon ass while picking up and dropping ladies like beer cans. Not so. Sure there's a distinct lack of female presence there, but you'll accept it once you see what the show's real dynamic is about, and how decorative female characters would have ruined it.
