Why would they ask you to take your 3D glasses off only 15 minutes into the film?

I don't know if this is commonly done but I remember a few years ago, movies were sometimes shown with only some scenes in 3-D. I saw Superman Returns like that, there was an icon on the screen that told you when to take your glasses on/off.

Oh, weird. I've never seen that done before. But, then again, I rarely go to 3D films to begin with.

Only certain scenes are converted, usually the big action scenes, I think to save money. I saw OOTP and HBP in IMAX 3D. In OOTP, it was the big fight in the Ministry of Magic; in HBP, it was the bridge collapse at the beginning.
