I feel the same, and I'm not even from Northern England, but just from the North of my country.

[identity profile] fullofowls.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
YESSSS GO NORTHERNERS

I'm from New York, not old York, but North is North, if we're going to be illogically regionalistic :)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's really nice of you to show support, but I kind of want to point out that it's not the same at all. New York is often portrayed as the heart of the USA, it's what foreigners often think of if they think of the country - whereas the North in England is often mocked/mis- or under-represented in the media/ignored.

[identity profile] fullofowls.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say it was... You're partially right and partially wrong. New York City and the rest of New York state are very different. I'm from the city, but I've lived in upstate as well, and it's sort of a sad place, because all the industry has gone away and all the small towns have been dying a slow economic death for a long time now. It's not called the Rust Belt for nothing. And in previous times upstate NY, along with Vermont, was one of the sources of the "Yankee hillbilly" stereotype. People in the city sort of frown a bit when they're reminded upstate exists.

(On the other hand, we do have apples. Lots and lots of apples. I think New York produces more apples than everyone in the entire state could eat.)

And New York is not 'the heart of the USA', in any way shape or form, no matter how much people claimed to identify with us after 9/11. We're considered damn dirty liberals, hardly better than California, LOL (despite the fact that much of upstate is conservative).

OH I JUST REMEMBERED. If you really want to read something good about the North of England, read "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. I love that book. It is the only book I know where the footnotes are longer than the chapters and where the magic actually makes sense.

I don't know. Proud to be from the North for the first time? Good for you, you must be different to everyone else in the North of England, most of you can't shut up about it. You're all 'tough Northerners' not 'pansy Southerners' we know, we get it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, SOUTHERNER. ;)

(but yeah, as a northerner I was a bit surprised by this secret since everyone else I know is very proud to be northern. OH NO I AM A LIVING STEREOTYPE.)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Why weren't you proud before? :D Northerners are awesome! (Liverpool anon here ftr)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh lord, Northerners in England. They've all got this massive victim complex, and they think they're better than everyone else.

And if any English person ever lives in the North for a time, a job, university, 4 years when they were small, they'll forever claim the pub/barroom credibility of being a northerner. Whatever, get over yourselves, the Notherners-born are laughing at you (while secretly afraid you think you're better than them - victim complex, you see.)

scotland, now that's north

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The English - you're all the same to the celtic nations, anyway.

Re: scotland, now that's north

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is actually true. I'm from Glasgow, so you're all southerners to me, and I'm a southerner to someone from Aberdeen. It's all relative.

Am I missing something? I thought Game of Thrones took place in fantasy land, not England. What's with what seems like the exclusion of any place other than England in this thread?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it takes place in fantasy land, but GRRM has started that he based the books on the Wars of the Roses, and, to a lesser extent, the Jacobite Rebellions. The Wall is a direct analogue to Hadrian's Wall. Finally, the secret maker used the phrase "up north", which is so tied with the English north that it has become a stereotype.

You are missing something: knowledge of context. It is the same as Tolkien's Shire; it might be a place in a fantasy world, but everything about the Shires comes from the English shires.

The phrasing that the secret poster used ('up north') tends to refer specifically to the north of England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_England - Nickname(s): Up North, and also http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OopNorth [which I have never understood, since I do not pronounce 'up' as 'oop', I pronounce 'up' like it's spelt whereas southerns pronounce it 'ahp' (:P), but anyway]).

Plus there was obviously a deliberate decision on the part of the people who make Game of Thrones to have the Starks and their bannermen speak with 'northern' English accents (and not just because Sean Bean is playing Ned).
