i don't really see the point in distinguishing between hetero people and heteronormative hetero people, it just sounds sort of condescending and obnoxious to make a distinction.

using it to describe queer people is even worse, and while i know that's not happening here i've seen it.

I can't help but laugh at Jade's face in this page every single time.

Okay but these kisses weren't romantic and all but the Karkat/Kanaya one were framed mockingly so I'm not sure they're really big ringing endorsements of those heterosexual relationships?? I wish there was more canon gay in Homestuck too (Kanaya/Rose i still belieeeeeve) but I don't get the anger over the jokey corpse-smooching. Would it have been more empowering to have ~*~hilarious~*~ gay kisses?

Jesus fuck, but that comic is ugly. That's the main reason I hate Homestuck secrets: I can't scroll past the pixelvomit fast enough.

*gasp* You're right! None of us have ever noticed how hideous the art is before, but now we have been shown the error of our ways! Now that you've pointed out that the comic which we love is, in fact, ugly, we are freed from its spell and will cease to care at all and you will never, ever, have to look at another Homestuck secret again, because any art that is not photo-realistic pictures of beautiful people cannot possibly be worth our time.

Okay? I'm not saying anyone else does or should find it ugly, or mind the ugliness, or whatever. I wasn't trying to change anyone's mind, or call Homestuck a waste of time, though I see how my voicing a negative opinion might be seen that way. I'm also not expecting never to see another Homestuck secret, or anyone to care that I'd rather not.

I'm having a bad day, and like I said, reached some sort of breaking point there with my irritation that lead to me airing my very personal grievances. It was just a thought tossed in the air, an exorcism of irritation, if you will. Do whatever you want with your time; sorry if my personal opinion took too many seconds out of it.

In explanation but not excuse - even if it's the first time you've said it, that's a criticism that Homestuck fans hear a lot, and it gets grating really quickly. I happen to like the artistic style of Homestuck, and when someone pulls out the old "but it's ugly" argument, it feels a like an attack on my own aesthetic judgement - which really hurts, especially as I'm an artist and a cartoonist myself. And I know you didn't mean it like that. I let my pride run away with me, and I'm sorry.

I figure my irrational defensiveness wasted at least as much of your time as your personal opinion did of mine, so I'm willing to call it even if you are. ;)

This is kind of silly!

Yeah, I would have loved to see some gay corpsesmooching, but there's nothing romantic or sexual about any of those kisses. In fact, at least two of them (and arguably the entire 4x CORPSESMOOCH COMBO spread) were being played for laughs.

To be honest, I'm more weirded out about your accusations of "borderline necrophilia," because it just makes it seem like you don't know what necrophilia is. Giving someone a chaste kiss because you think it will bring them back to life really isn't the same thing. Hell, there are canons where someone is cradling a dying loved one and when they finally kick the bucket, they give them a "last kiss"; that actually does have to do with romance and it still wouldn't be necrophilia, borderline or otherwise.

Funny, because while you can argue that the fandom is skirting pedophilia (which I personally think is kind of stupid!), there are no romantic or sexual relationships between adults and children in Homestuck, there's no canonical sexification fanservice, and the kid characters have, at most, kissed each other. All of which would make pedophilia also not in the comic in any way, shape, or form!

Bestiality, now, that you can argue being borderline in the comic, with Slick's copy of Terrier Fancy and all. :D

I'm assuming you do not actually read the comic, given this and your comment below.

Basically, this is shorthand. "Corpsesmooching" is, in the bounds of the comic, a quick kiss given to someone who's just been killed. If their dream self (aka basically a backup life) is still alive, it "wakes up" -- it's pretty much exactly like being given an extra life in a video game.

Tbh I'd much rather see, you know, some kind of mutual relationship between characters that happens to not be straight -- for a comic where the entire troll race is pretty much canonically pansexual and doesn't even have words for the idea of "straight" or "gay," all of the even semi-confirmed relationships are het, and that gets kind of old -- it does get a little more annoying that, besides the three canonical mutual kisses all being male/female, the five times when a character kisses someone literally JUST to save their life, an instance where there is no sexual or even romantic sentiment necessarily involved, there is apparently no instance where a girl is around a girl to do this, and cares enough about her to do so, or a boy is around a boy and cares enough about him.

It's kind of frustrating, because for a "more progressive" comic -- which it IS sadly more progressive than most -- it sure does let us down sometimes!
