Andrew is a heteronormative dudebro, details at 11.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
hetero =/= heteronormative

can we stop using heteronormative to describe people it really makes no fucking sense

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It makes perfect sense.

Not exactly in this context, but it makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
how? honestly curious here, since i think it's a good term for stuff like society/media, etc.

i don't really see the point in distinguishing between hetero people and heteronormative hetero people, it just sounds sort of condescending and obnoxious to make a distinction.

using it to describe queer people is even worse, and while i know that's not happening here i've seen it.

I believe that in this case, it's generally used to refer to the fact that Hussie has created an alien race who are so inherently bisexual that they don't have words for gender-based sexual orientation, and then proceeded to have every single canon pairing that can be considered remotely successful be a heterosexual one. Which kind of gives the impression that it's ok for the trolls to be bi, but not too bi. That's the kind of thing that makes people reach for buzzwords, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, and i would get it if she said that homestuck was heteronormative, but that's different than hussie himself.

[identity profile] bramble-patch.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect that we're mostly arguing over semantics. Would you accept "Hussie's work displays heteronormitive attitudes which, as he has made no attempt to distance himself from said attitudes, may indicate that he holds similar problematic patterns of thought," then?

Because perhaps you're right and a person is too complex an entity to be described as heteronormitive, but a person's attitudes, words, and actions can certainly be described as such. And with a story that indulges in author involvement as much as Homestuck does, I'm uncomfortable trying to completely separate the author's politics from the story. Death of the author is all well and good, but it's a little hard to apply when not only is the author in constant direct contact with the audience, he has promised further direct involvement of his author avatar in the story.

That said, I've typed the word "heteronormative" far more times today than I like, because I do firmly believe that overuse of buzzwords just makes the people using them feel superior and the people hearing them feel defensive, which isn't good for exchange of information in either direction.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
sorry, i didn't really mean to sound argumentative because i'm not, i just think it's a weird use of the word that i've been seeing more and more?

i think we're pretty much on the same page, i was just honestly curious.

[identity profile] bramble-patch.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, no, perhaps I should have said "debating" rather than "arguing over" - I was honestly enjoying myself, and at no point have you seemed hostile or overly defensive. You're attempting to define words so that they can be understood by everyone present rather than hide behind them, which I admire in a person.

I, on the other hand, sometimes need to take a step back and realize that heated debate is not everyone's idea of a good time, and that sometimes I'm motivated more by my need to be right than by my need to find the right answers, and I'm sorry if I've come across as attacking you.
