Publishing a fan fic as OF? How would that fly? Just with names change?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I can see how just a name change and maybe scrubbing the sparkles off the skin will do it. There are a whole lot of teenage vampire love stories out there right now. I assume the story has it's own plot, otherwise even as fanfic it wouldn't fly.

I'm fairly sure I know who the OP is talking about, and if you saw the summary of her book you would easily see the Twilight comparisons within it.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Was it vanity published or for real published do you know?

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Real publish... I think. The Writing's Coffee Shop Publishing house, though it does seem shady to me.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, may I ask what book(s) is it? Is it really obvious that it's based on a fan fiction?

Not that I'd know. I'm one of those "all romance reads the same" people. Not the boat I flow, really.

I never bought the book. I just read the summary and immediately saw the comparison with Twilight:

1) She finds the love interest: "attractive, enigmatic and intimidating."

2) "...he happens to turn up at the out-of-town hardware store where she works part-time."

3) "...and when he warns her to keep her distance it only makes her more desperate to get close to him."

4) "For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving adoptive family – Grey is man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control."

hahahaha oh dear

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've got to say though, the fifty words description of the female lead makes me think that she's at least more of a character than, say, the Twilight lead.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Apologies for the third reply as I can't edit my. I just looked up the book's review on Amazon. Um. Wow. Um.

As someone who's unfamiliar with this, I am rather stumped on just about every single reviews called it flat out a fan fiction as everyone knew it was. To the point that people complained that they are "OOC compared to Twilight".

Um. Wow.

"unworldly, innocent Ana"

Immediate ladyboner-killer

XD I read the description and it reads like every R.L Stine, Christopher Pike, Richie Cusick, Diane Hoh, and Caroline B. Cooney I read when I was a teen. Young adult thriller romance fluff.

But I do see similarities to Twilight that make me go, "Hm..."

You also forgot:

"Convinced their meeting went badly, [Ana] tries to put Grey out of her mind."

"Shocked yet thrilled by Grey's singular erotic tastes..."

"Grey is [a] man tormented by demons..." (found a typo :P)

Hmm, going off that I wouldn't be surprised if "Twilight" style became a genre in and of itself. Kinda like Mills&Boon, where the stories are near identical with slightly different details.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, how else do you think Twilight was published?

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't consider Twilight derivative enough to be called a published fan fiction. Sure it has elements that are likely based on other things, but it's not exactly unique to Twilight.

The writing style and the lacking of editing is the only thing I consider "fanfic-like", which is not something that hinders publishing on a copy right infringement level.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
But if you change the names/things exclusive to the fandom and make your own of them, there is no copyright infringement.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
So what is Twilight derivative of?
