I kind of have the same vaguely uncomfortable feeling about Scrubs, and Cox/JD getting so much more attention than JD/Turk. Despite...everything. I don't want to call it racism, per se, in either case, just, to be utterly passive aggressive sounding, I always find it so odd when the big slash pairings tend to be white guy/white guy when there's some unusually close and codependent bromances that are non-white guy/white guy in the canon mix as well.

I have heard and kind of believe the "Oh, but the antagonistic relationship tends to be more interesting", "Oh, they just hand JD/Turk (or Shawn/Gus) to us on a platter, it's more fun if it's something you have to work for a little", etc, etc justifications. But a part of me just doesn't always fully buy it.

I mean, you have things like Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, House and Wilson, Josh and Sam from The West Wing, all of whom have that same kind of close best-friendship and they're by far the biggest slash pairings in their respective fandoms. So, yeah. I think you're right that if both Gus and Shawn were white, chances are they'd be the most popular.

THIS.

Well, Cox/JD is, dynamics wise, a ship like Shawn/Lassie so it makes sense that people who ship one would ship the other. Even though it is not my sort of ship dynamics wise, I actually do ship JD/Turk in a 'wouldn't that be sweet' sort of way, but I wouldn't ever feel a drive to write fic about it, even with their relationship being my favorite on the show.

Josh and Sam is a good comparison, but I don't think House/Wilson and Holmes/Watson are because both of those relationships are very antagonistic even in their friendship. I think they are closer related to a ship like JD/Cox and Shawn/Lassie, then the kind of vibe you get from JD/Turk and Shawn/Gus who are pure BFF with very little angst between them. If Psych was a bit more of a drama than a comedy, I could see Shawn/Gus being in that vein because of the way Shawn treats their friendship from time to time, but it's played off very lightly on the show. Another good comparison to Shawn/Gus would be Harry/Ron which I also don't ship, but I DO ship Harry/Draco which fits into the Shawn/Lassie category very well.

Everyone likes different sort of ships, and some people are just more into the love/hate relationships than the BFF ones. Just my two cents.

diff anon.

Shawn and Gus are supposed to be another version/adaptation of Holmes and Watson. And I would argue that that antagonism between Homes/Watson and House/Wilson (which is yet another adaptation of Holmes), where, "You are my best friend in the entire world and I couldn't live without you but you annoy the SHIT out of me sometimes" is very, intentionally, similar. Gus is often frustrated by Shawn and Shawn's schemes. It doesn't get as "bad" simply because of the lighter tone of the show, but I think the comparison is spot-on.

da

That's obvious enough, but it's a pretty loose adaption and the actual character dynamics don't parallel much when examined with any seriousness.

For me, the line with Shawn and Gus wasn't how good of friends they were, but how much like family they were. If they had met as adult men and become close buds, then it might be different for me. Shawn and Gus are sandbox love.

Okay, I can see that from your explanation. I think my view of Holmes/Watson and House/Wilson comes from the things that attract me to their relationship, which isn't necessarily the way they are BFF. I like the slightly (or not so slightly) damaged person leaning on and relating to someone who in their own way is equally messed up, and they depend on one another because of that. Shawn/Gus is missing that for me overall. It was there a bit in S1, but they sort of dropped Shawn's angsting over his dad as they became closer.

I can definitely see the comparisons between Shawn/Holmes and Gus/Watson now, but it is missing that 'piece' that does it for me, I guess. I'm a sucker for angst and Shawn/Gus is overall angst free due to presentation and the way Gus takes Shawn's shenanigans in stride. But I can totally see now, where a fic writer could play with that and turn it into something a bit more serious. The angst that comes with the Watson/Wilson character having to deal with feeling like they carry the brunt of the relationship isn't as present for me with Shawn/Gus which hinges almost directly on tone.

As for the way H/W reminds me of ships like Shawn/Lassi, it's basically just in the fact that their relationships, in no matter what form they are in, aren't easy ones and there are a lot of obstacles to overcome to get to that place of comfort. That was where I was coming from in my above comment.

IDK, I just rambled at you. Not sure if I got my mindset on this across, but hey, you opened my eyes to dynamics in the Shawn/Gus relationship, so that's pretty cool.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I could help! Yeah, what initially drew me to the show was that it was another adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, which I love in all it's many, many forms. I'd been growing really frustrated with the House/Wilson take on it, as it honestly started to feel like Wilson was a battered wife who refused to leave his abusive spouse for a period there, and Shawn/Gus was a delightful, lighthearted change. The deep friendship is there, but it IS "missing" (I don't want to imply lacking but I can't think of a better word) that damaged/angsty side. It's codependent and it's sometimes pretty messed up, but at the end of the day, I really do feel like Shawn cares about Gus as much as Gus cares about Shawn.

So, I do understand where you're coming from, and why the darker versions would appeal to your pairing preferences. The missing piece is exactly what made it appealing for me, though. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see any of the relationships you mentioned being at all like JD/Turk or Shawn/Gus, though. Maybe it's the comedy/drama divide. I'm trying to think of better examples, but comedy shows tend to not have huge shipping fandoms, so I don't know.

I've been on both sides of this debate. I'm currently on the "I don't ship Shawn/Gus because of character dynamics" side, but years ago I was on the "Why is everyone too racist to ship Gunn/Wesley?" side.

I don't really know what to say. I disagree with you, but understand your point of view. I think sometimes it's subconscious racism, and sometimes it's not.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
DA

To me it's less about any individual fandom's situation, and more the repeated pattern that I find notable. And of course none of this is to say any individual fan is racist, but that the pattern is a little too striking to be purely coincidence.

Well, I definitely agree with this, on a fandom wide/general pattern level. I was just speaking to the specific fandom and the secret itself. The secret maker blatantly says that her Shawn/Lassiter shipping friends are being (unintentionally) racist just for shipping Shawn/Lassiter. That's the part I had a problem with.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-01 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[identity profile] glasgowsmiles.livejournal.com 2011-07-01 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
You know, it's weird, 'cause I 'ship Shawn/Gus like CRAZY, but despite my welded-on slash goggles, I could never 'ship JD and Turk. Their Guy Love seemed too strong-but-not-romantic to me, I guess. And I wound up liking Turk/Carla.

Then the show jumped the shark for me about fifty times, kept getting resurrected after they wrote a real ending, etc., but that's not important... (I didn't notice Cox/JD getting more attention that Turk/JD, but maybe it's just because the only time I even checked Scrubs stuff, it wasn't the case, or at least wasn't the case at whatever specific place I checked...)

On the subject of non-white guy/white guy pairings, though, I 'shipped Mickey/Danny on Hustle like BURNING.

(I have others, they're just... they're just far more embarrassing)
