I don't really ship anything in Psych (I like them all as bffs) but to me Shawn/Gus would be the ship that made the most sense. They have the most chemistry and their relationship is why I even got into the show.

I just don't like to make epic bromances into romances because I really appreciate close friendships being written on television, but it's definitely one of those relationships that I would think a lot of people WOULD ship.

Preferring a different ship doesn't make someone racist. Preferring a different ship because Gus is black would make them racist. I don't ship them because I don't really ever ship friends. I love them as friends and think their relationship is the strongest and most meaningful on the show. The only one that comes close IMHO is Shawn and Henry's.

Then again, what do I know? The closest I have for a ship in that fandom is Lassie/Jules so obviously I am doing it wrong!

It may not be racist per se, at least not intentionally racist, but in most fandoms the biggest slash pairing is always between two white guys. I'm in a fandom where one of the leads is Latino and he appears in about 10% of all the slash fic that exists. The rest all focuses on a ship containing at least two of the three white leads.

It probably would be the main ship if (especially at the first) Lassie doesn't spend every episode physically pawing at him and practically announcing that he wanks off to the thought of discrediting him.

Not saying Shawn and Gus aren't awesome, but Lassie is boombox outside the window vowing to follow him to the ends of the earth (To prove he's not psychic) scary obsessed.

I don't ship them because I see them as brothers. Gus, IMO, is just as much a part of Shawn's family as Henry is. And it feels a bit incestuous to me to ship them.

Having said that, I do not understand why Shawn/Lassiter is so popular. I love both characters but their interactions do nothing at all for me. I would have thought Shawn/Gus would be the main ship. Because it's not like a brotherly bond stops other fandoms. So, I really don't understand why that ship is so small but Shawn/Lassie is so large.

In any case the only ship I have for Psych is Lassiter/Juliet. But the Shawn and Gus relationship is the reason I watch the show. Followed by Shawn and Henry.

I went into Psych prepared to ship Shawn and Gus, because it aesthetically works for me very much. But then I watched the show, and the dynamic of their friendship was such that I didn't want to think about them together sexually. So I mostly read Shawn/Lassiter fic. Then I went through all the Shawn/Lassiter fic, and read the Shawn/Gus fic for good measure. I also read some Lassiter/Jules fic.

I know you won't believe me, but it definitely wasn't a racially motivated decision. Do I think it is for some people? Definitely. But I think you overstate it a bit. I honestly think it has more to do with people preferring enemy pairings to best friend pairings.

I agree with the anon up there. Shawn/Lassiter is popular because of the character dynamics, the hate/love relationship. I have no doubts that even if Gus was white, they ships popularity wouldn't change at all.

I don't ship it because it feels like incest to me. They're bros, heterosexual lifemates, and tbh I feel like shipping them is completely ignoring that 1) both have been extremely attracted to women, 2) neither has shown any indication they are polyamorous. If they had shown them to be poly, one could see it as "they are together but also get with women" and were bisexual. If Shawn and Gus were together, then Shawn hooked up with his boyfriend's sister and tried to repeatedly, expressly without his consent, and that seems even more inappropriate than the massive amounts of inappropriate things Shawn has done. And they compete for women multiple times IIRC, which doesn't make sense if they're together.

TL;DR Shawn/Gus makes me uncomfortable, nothing to do with race, and I don't ship Shawn/Lassie or Shawn/Jules either (the first is OOC and the second is too "Rape is love" trope with the way he sexually harassed her for years). Gus and Lassi are actually my favorite characters on the show, I just don't see any canon ships for them (not counting Lassi/Chief's sister whose name I can't remember). And I cros-canon ship Lassi with Tim Gutterson from Justified, anyway.

I ship Shawn/Lassiter because it's the sort of dynamic I like. I love relationships where people have to overcome previous misconceptions of someone, or the feelings transform into something else. I guess you can say the 'pulling pigtails' syndrome. Fic wise, there is a lot to play around with Shawn/Lassiter, and a lot of places you can go with it growth wise for both characters apart and together.

Whereas Shawn/Gus, we have seen their entire relationship spanning years and they are in a comfortable place with each other. The change that would happen between them if they become something more is a lot more subtle, and not as interesting (for me anyway) to read about or explore. I honestly thought going in I would ship them, but everything about them reminds me of the kind of relationships I have with my good friends; not significant others.

I'm not racist. I just like it when a ship makes me think, and ponder the possibilities.

Slash ships generally don't interest me, but they're dynamic temps me greatly. The only thing that stops me is that time and time again, the show reminds me that Gus is just too fucking good for Shawn. In fact, I think everyone on the cast is too good for Shawn, and I say this as someone who adores him.

I only watched the first season and pretty much stayed away from fandom but I was seriously surprised that Shawn/Gus is just dripping in the slash communities. But then I was surprised Harry/Draco is such a popular ship so...

I kind of have the same vaguely uncomfortable feeling about Scrubs, and Cox/JD getting so much more attention than JD/Turk. Despite...everything. I don't want to call it racism, per se, in either case, just, to be utterly passive aggressive sounding, I always find it so odd when the big slash pairings tend to be white guy/white guy when there's some unusually close and codependent bromances that are non-white guy/white guy in the canon mix as well.

I have heard and kind of believe the "Oh, but the antagonistic relationship tends to be more interesting", "Oh, they just hand JD/Turk (or Shawn/Gus) to us on a platter, it's more fun if it's something you have to work for a little", etc, etc justifications. But a part of me just doesn't always fully buy it.

I mean, you have things like Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, House and Wilson, Josh and Sam from The West Wing, all of whom have that same kind of close best-friendship and they're by far the biggest slash pairings in their respective fandoms. So, yeah. I think you're right that if both Gus and Shawn were white, chances are they'd be the most popular.

this is true and idgaf if it upsets ppl to admit it. if gus were white i'm sure shawn/lassiter would still be a big ship, but you can guaranteeeee that if gus were played instead by one of the hot white guy flavors of the month, shawn/gus would at least be more popular than it is now.

when i first looked into the fandom i was honestly shocked that shawn/gus wasn't more popular. :/
