Does the fact that this pairing isn't very popular mean that the fandom, as a whole, has a problem with internalized, unintended racism? No doubt.

Does an individual person not shipping this pairing mean that specific person is racist? No, it doesn't. Not necessarily.

Some people are going to prefer certain ships to others, or not ship certain things entirely. The problem is that fandoms as a whole tend to turn their noses up at pairings that involve one or more POC. But even if those pairings were popular, not every single person would ship them, and the ones who didn't wouldn't automatically be racist. The problem is when the ship is ignored by an unreasonable number of people, not in each and every individual person who doesn't ship it.

Yes, the fandom probably has issues with racism as a whole. No, it's not fair for you to judge your friends as being racist, unintended or not, simply because they don't like a specific pairing. If the only "sign" you're seeing of potential racism is that they don't ship Shawn/Gus specifically, that doesn't say much.

I can get behind this, though with a caveat that it might be worth looking at these specific friends' character and 'shipping preferences in all their fandoms. I ended up becoming deeply uncomfortable with a friend in "Doctor Who" fandom who found a way to hate on EVERY SINGLE FEMALE COMPANION. If it were just Rose, or just Amy- or hell, even if it were just the New Who companions and she had loved the Old School Who ones, that would've been less discomfiting. But when it's every single one? There came a point where all I could think was, "You know, the problem here might be you.." (Her-you, not you-you, obviously.)

So if this person's friends are not just ignoring Shawn/Gus, but also every single 'ship involving a PoC that they've ever had put in front of them? That's probably worth asking about, I think. :-/
