Simple, OP. You keep a separate account/FB for your cosplay from your personal stuff, and don't publish your name everywhere. Quite a few people do it, and are known by their username.

my reason for not joining up cosplay is that there is a serious lack of nonshitty black characters. like the world needs a millionth Storm cosplayer.

and i keep getting 'it wouldn't look right, it'd just be like you wearing a [insert white/other race character] costume, not actually being them' from my friends.

:(

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
no offense, but your friends kind of suck. i've seen people of many different races cosplay a given character better than the white cosplayer next to them. cosplay whoever you want! :)

The majority of cosplayers in anime fandom in the west are white and predominately cosplay asian characters. So try not to worry about it.

[identity profile] hoshika.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people cosplay, and they don't let judge-y asshole stop them from doing that. So you shouldn't either! You don't have to be white, asian, and skinny to cosplay. That's what those "elitist cosplayers" want you to think so you can hate yourself and not enjoy your fandom.

So fuck'em! Do what you want anon!

Racebending ftw tho, anon.

I don't see why most cosplay (not any of the ones you pictured at least) would potentially get you into trouble with an employer. It's just like a costume party or something. That'd be what I'd say if I were questioned about it. "Just a kind of costume party! It was a lot of fun. :D"

(posted this in response to the wrong person, d'oh!)

[identity profile] peachxcandy.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, like others have said, if you just don't attach your name to anything you should really be fine. I guess the more suggestive types of cosplay could potentially (?) be a problem, but seriously, just keep a level of privacy that you're comfortable with and have fun!

You sound like my mother. She's convinced that everyone who would ever consider hiring me has seen my profile and won't consider me because I say "fuck" occasionally. Unless you're doing something obscene or really inappropriate, there's no reason it should be a factor. If any place gave you a hard time about something that harmless, that's probably somewhere you don't wanna work.

Hell with that. I say just do it!

[identity profile] trowa.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
my employers found my cosplay pics. Aside from a little ribbing now and then when I take vacation days for cons, they don't care.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My facebook's not under my real name, but I think it can be traced with enough snooping around.

I don't think employers care all that much, and your hobbies will likely slip out in conversation at some point even if you try to hide them. And if you have any choice in the matter and aren't just desperate for any job (which sadly in this economy most people seem to be) you don't *want* a boss who'll fire you for cosplaying.

[identity profile] tardiscrash.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't honestly think that anyone would care. It's not like you are doing drugs or getting pass out drunk and talking about it where work people can see. Or even writing explicit fan fic or anything vaguely dodgy.

Most people not in fandom hardly even know what cosplay is, they would just think it's for a fancy dress party or Halloween or something.

Generally having a healthy constructive hobby like sewing reflects well on a person so as long as you aren't going on about thinking that you ARE the character or being weird about it then I doubt anyone would think twice.

I used to think like this, but then I went to a job interview where he said that people (at least, he did) like to see that you do things other than work. They want interesting employees who have a life outside of work, people they can talk to since they have to spend all day with you every day.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You can always just NOT post pictures online, OP. I myself never have, and I'm sure a lot more people haven't, as well.

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the others have said, if you're that worried, make it a different account or something. How much cosplay are we talking, anyway? If you did a few costumes a year or what have you, just say it's for a costume party or something.

Calm yoself.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Who has a facebook with their real name anymore nowadays, tho?

Just asking for trouble IMO.

Hell, my coworkers and I talk to each other about our cosplays/plans for cosplays. nbd, OP!

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Do it anyway. There's geeks everywhere, in every occupation.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Do not refuse to live your life the way you want on the off-chance that a closed-minded interviewer or boss decides not to hire you for a job one day.

I think this is something very important that's being forgotten in the information age and it took every ounce of self-restraint not to type that first sentence in all caps. I agree that it's short-sighted and not well thought out to post pictures of, say, illicit drug use on your facebook for sure. But there's nothing wrong or illegal about cosplay.
Post under screen names, friends-lock your photos, do whatever you need to do to make yourself feel comfortable. But beyond that, what job would be worth giving up the things you love in your free time?

[identity profile] seraphwings.livejournal.com 2011-07-04 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Orrrr, you could live how you want to live, do the things you want to do, and find a job wherein people accept you for that.

My boss loves my cosplay pictures. She sent them to her husband to show him "how neat and cute" her assistant is.
