I enjoy playing with noobs. They generally love the characters for their personalities rather than the gameplay itself, and teaching a new Pyro how to airblast to deflect rockets make me all warm and fuzzy.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought half the fun was in the challenge and/or just the company of whoever you were playing with. But I'm also overly-nice in an online gaming environment.

I'd probably be running around juggling new people with compression blasts because I'm the most annoying pyro in the universe (or just medic-ing because that's what I do 98% of the time), buuuut I don't use Windows at the moment.

Try not to make too many people ragequit!

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
You can play TF2 on a Mac now. :P

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Only if your mac is up to spec - and there are a lot of macs that you can't upgrade the hardware on.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't really do anything for me since I use a Linux-based OS. I briefly tried running it through Wine and VirtualBox, and while it kind of works, my computer's a bit of a dinosaur so it's a little sad to watch it trying to chug along like that. I should probably just bite the bullet and bring back my Windows partition.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I was going to say in the comment something about Linux, but then I figured if you were using it then you'd know how to dual-boot. ;) I actually find that Valve games in general seem to run pretty well on older computers all things considering. My boyfriend's got an ancient computer and it's playable. :)

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, yeah, I can dual boot and all that shit, I just let my Linux partition eat my Windows one after there was kind of a lull and most of my friends got bored with Steam games for a while. I figured by the time I felt compelled to start playing games again I'd have gotten a hold of a new laptop, but that sort of didn't happen.

I spent something like a year playing TF2 pretty much every night with my bros on this old thing, so I know it's capable of running the game as long as I dong around with the settings just the right way.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, quit a few of the people who are starting to play now are doing because they couldn't afford it before, right? [Yes, even at like...10 bucks there were people who couldn't afford it w/o taking it away from other things they'd rather have]

So not all of them are into the fandom. Hell, even those that are, a lot of them aren't about the shipping so much as just enjoying the characters.

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
That would be me. Only, less that I couldn't afford it and more than my computer couldn't handle it. Now I have a new laptop, and I'm honestly a bit worried about playing because of these types of people. But, hey, it could be worse.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Naw, don't worry about it. Just remember, there are tons of other noobs on the open servers too, so that should help lessen the actual killing on everyone hopefully. [Or at least keep most of them from specifically stalking any one new player.]

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
>pwn
>noobs

IT'S LIKE I'M REALLY 14 AGAIN!

[identity profile] whatwouldwasdo.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
this is the best damn news i've had all year

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
...This mental just gives me the mental of a dog licking their chops which is...actually kinda disturbing in context. : /

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Because, you know, it's impossible to like both the characters and the actual game, like some sort of TF2 Uncertainty Principle.

Personally, I'm just thrilled because now my friends have no excuse not to come play with me! *dons lab coat, pulls on gloves* It vill be STUPENDOUS!

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)

made me giggle IRL. Well put!

[identity profile] hello-ilu.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
and this is why I just assume everybody I play with in an open server is judging the fuck out of me for existing. :/

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's why you judge them right the fuck back.

With your FISTS.

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Because I wasn't able to play it earlier, and have been lucky enough to now be able to play when it becomes free, I'm a fucking noob who deserves to get my ass handed to me and endlessly mocked.

[identity profile] cowgirlmaxwell.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
if you're excited for a wave of newcomers just so you can 'pwn' them then obviously you're too shit at this game to dominate people under normal conditions

I'm so glad I don't go on pub servers anymore so I don't have to deal with shitty self-righteous guuurl gamerzzz like you

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I love this secret! How the hell did a game like TF2 get so romanticized? Squeeing fangirls need to back the fuck off of decent video games. Go ship Final Fantasy

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone's feeling a little butthurt, huh? And uh...did you miss the 'Meet the X' videos, or the actual comics Valve put out? It *is* possible to get a decent sense of what the characters are like and to like the characters, which - as far as I know - is a sign of a 'decent video game'.

Then again, from how you worded things, your probably one of the people who thinks that the only definition of decent game = killing other people.

Also, a pretty good number of people in the fandom actually do, you know, play the game.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Team Fortress is unique in that the personas were created OUTSIDE the actual game. There is not much in the gameplay that would give any semblance of a story. It's an arcade FPS shooter with a wide range of CLASSES each with unique abilities that play on a variety of maps with different modes, such as payload, capture the flag, and king of the hill. Valve did something different and made the 'Meet the X' videos to promote the game. The reaction was so well received they continued the marketing strategy. One of their strong points as a company is their marketing team. But going back to the game, there are no cut scenes in the game. The most there is are taunts and one liners. There are a lot of people who play the games who consider the backstories separate because they don't show up in the actual gameplay. As opposed to Half-Life or Portal 2 where the characters stories are told within the game. It's like if Valve decided to give names and stories to each of the CTs in Counter-Strike and stuck stupid hats in the game because that's exactly what they did with Team Fortress.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and no. There was some thought put into the game characters because they *do* still have hints at their characters in the game [Look at some of the domination lines, for example]. And that still doesn't change the fact that people can *like* the characters, and - as a general rule - liking the characters helps in liking the game.

And, bluntly, liking the backstories, or the characters, is *not* a reason to look down on someone for picking up the game, which is the reason I originally responded to robin's comment.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-07-04 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I've seen the videos, but there's a difference between liking the characters and making cutesy fanart. Weeaboos need to GTFO of TF2. Go read your manga and when you get the guts to speak up, maybe have the balls to not do it anonymously.
