I've hate hate hated how the show has used MOTW episodes for the last two seasons. If you're going to create epic plotlines like the apocalypse or Lucifer destroying mankind, at least make sure the MOTW episodes have some relevance to that. If Lucifer is mere weeks away from killing everyone, I very much doubt the Winchesters are going to go undercover as mental hospital patients to deal with a petty wraith. Crap like that really bothered me because it took away from the main plot an possible character development of the antagonists (seriously, Lucifer only appeared in 5 episodes. He shoul have appeared in more!). Feel free to use the MOTW format every now and then, but just don't forget the impending doom everyone should be worried about.

I think that if you included Lucifer any more it would have come across as overkill. He seriously outclassed them, and part of what made his appearances scary was 1) his crazy and 2) how mortal he makes Sam and Dean seem.

I mean, really, he was a good main villain (if you consider the five seasons to be the main canon and the sixth season as extended universe canon like I do) because he only showed up when he had to, but he DID show up so there was no doubting he was there and every episode it would be like 'oh god its lucifer' then no lucifer. Then again, I loved Lucifer, and I loved how they handled him, so I'm a little biased.

but no I like your commment about how the MOTW should have been related to the season arcs. That's one of the reasons I never felt like Bela fit in with Season 3, which seemed to be really "Sam and Dean as brothers"-centric.

Yeah, that's true. I guess the only time I felt really threatened by Lucifer was when he physically appeared in an episode. There was a lot of talk about how powerful he was, but rarely any action. We heard about natural disasters and people dying everywhere, but didn't see much of it.

And then the filler episodes would happen, and the supposed ~impending doom of the planet~ was forgotten about. :(

IMO a few more Lucifer appearances would have really nailed home just how big of a threat this guy was. Or if the MOTW episodes had more relevance to the apocalypse and to Lucifer, that feeling of impending doom would have continued growing, instead of constantly being dropped or forgotten about.

I think the MOTW plots definitely should have had more relevance to the apocalypse/Lucifer. I think that there would probably have been a way to add some'dark humor' to that because I know that they want to take a break from the more "serious" aspects once in a while.

I feel like Lucifer had his best performance in Hammer of the Gods. He wasn't in the majority of the episode, but once he did show up, he basically systematically slaughtered a room full of people the Winchesters had no chance against. I think that showed more than exposition or monologues could. So I agree with you in that sense. I just feel like if you have him show up too much, he becomes the elephant in the room sort of.
