I don't like the MOTW episodes. I watch for the storyline.

It's the other way round when I watch Buffy and Angel. I love the MOTW episodes. I don't give a fuck about the storyline.

I would only dislike MOTW if they continuously did it and nothing ever happened with the plot (and all the episodes were pretty much just one shots). I don't watch Supernatural but in shows like the X-files even when they do do MOTW they usually always added in at least some plot element or character moment that made the episodes worth rewatching for me.

From the pilot this show had an arc to it. It's never been just monster of the week. The show had to have more going for it than MotW. Hating that, or hating the arc is just stupid. The show needs both.

Exactly. At times, sure, one or the other falls flat for a while (this past season, I feel, tried to do too much with the MOTW in the first half and then crammed in arc plots into the last to the point where they couldn't breathe properly), but the show really does depend on both.

The first season was the best, imo, and had more MOTW than any other season. I pretty much stopped watching after season 2 because of this.

I think the Monster of the Week was just to space the plot out, tbh. I mean, if you look at the progression of the storyline as a whole over the course of 5 seasons, it had building action. things started really slow in the first two season and by season 4 they were now basically the hyper condensed version of seasons 1/2 but with angels, and there wasnt really time for monster of the week plots.

I mean, I do the same thing when I DM Dungeons and Dragons. My adventure plots always start off slow with a lot of side quests and optional stuff and throwaway monsters until the players get a hold of some actual conflict and it starts to grow exponentially grow. It's how stories are supposed to arch. It builds anticipation.

...OK, you lost me a little at "do you know what hunters do," but IA that hating that entire style/concept is sorta missing the point. Personally I prefer it when said monsters somehow apply/relate to a larger story arc, but yeah, that's definitely the root of the show.

I don't HATE the MOTW, I enjoy a whole lot of them, but I tend to like plotty arcs better than the standalone episodes. Judge if you must, but I don't judge people who prefer the opposite.

As horrible as Route 666 was plotwise, I loved Cassie, and I love Dean/Cassie so I watch that ep fairly often.

I liked it when Supernatural was, you know, Supernatural where there were monster and demons and ghost and urban legend; not this weird mess of angel and prophecies and God. If I wanted another show about religion and how religion and God is/isn't good then I would watch something else.

MOTW can be good when scary, as most of your examples show, but wow, was the Paris Hilton episode lame.

I've hate hate hated how the show has used MOTW episodes for the last two seasons. If you're going to create epic plotlines like the apocalypse or Lucifer destroying mankind, at least make sure the MOTW episodes have some relevance to that. If Lucifer is mere weeks away from killing everyone, I very much doubt the Winchesters are going to go undercover as mental hospital patients to deal with a petty wraith. Crap like that really bothered me because it took away from the main plot an possible character development of the antagonists (seriously, Lucifer only appeared in 5 episodes. He shoul have appeared in more!). Feel free to use the MOTW format every now and then, but just don't forget the impending doom everyone should be worried about.

I find the MOTW episodes too formulaic. Not that they're not enjoyable, but I think that they get boring when it's always:

-Someone dies/gets attacked.
-CREDITS.
-Sam and Dean come to town and interview people.
-Someone else dies/gets attacked.
-Sam and Dean ponder things.
-Sam and Dean fight and defeat MOTW.
-Random angst at end.

...then again, Season Four was my favorite, so my taste probably isn't that great.

The better content from that series comes from the MOTW episodes. I don't see why people bitch about them so much-- but people will have their opinions. I honestly find the ongoing plots to be kind of boring.
