So het fans talking about how nobody is ever gay and slash is gross and het is the only thing that can exist with a character is... better? I am so confused by this. Was that sarcasm?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I don't think that they're right either. But from what I've seen, the slash fans outnumber the het fans in their "the other side can't exist" opinions. I think that people who read het are more open about it, which is odd. Perhaps I'm just in different fandoms but I've never seen "slash can't exist, het is the only way with this character."

Slash is rarely anything but that.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Odd, you must not be in any of the really huge fandoms then. For example Harry Potter and Avatar: the Last Airbender are both notorious for their batshit het fans. And, there's always Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL ummm... Harry Potter has a HUGE, very vocal slash following. There are 10x more Harry/Draco or Remus/Sirius shippers than het ANYTHING shippers.

da

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
this whole thread is about how the het shippers are as bad as the slash shippers, not whether the slash shippers are more numerous or not, try to keep up

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Slash is rarely anything but that.

Umm...wrong.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Slash is rarely anything but that.
There is so much wrong with this sentence, hell, with this whole comment.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah no. Basically the pendelum has just swung the other way. When I started out in fandom as a teenager slash fans couldn't admit to being slash fans without getting flamed into oblivion and then banned off mailing lists. You couldn't post a PG slash story to an archive/list/wherever without labeling it explicit, warnings, etc etc. There were FREQUENT anti-slash diatribes.

And this just wasn't one fandom, it was pretty much every fandom I got into back then (mostly live-action televison, movie, and book fandoms, I can't speak to the behavior in comics or anime) and it stayed that way for a very, very long time. Slash fans got seriously marginalized and basically built their own spaces and, eventually, those spaces got big enough to fight back. NOW, it's swing the other way in a lot of fandoms and those spaces are as big, if not bigger, than the het spaces.

I wish I could say they're being more charitable than the het fans were back in the day, but I can't really blame them either. No one gets the moral high ground on this one anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Basically this.

Much as I hate it, the homophobe argument is probably a good thing in that it maybe stops that pendulum from swinging back to the other extreme. I don't condone the poor behavior on either side, but if there wasn't the SJ and the "anti-slash = homophobe" brigade, it would be too easy for a nastier kind of hate to happen. Hopefully there'll eventually be a nice, peaceful normalization of the whole thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-05 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
There are still fandoms where slash is marginalized and if you ship anything other than the Main Pairing (even het), you get hated on like crazy by a lot of the MAIN PAIRING = OTP AND NOTHING ELSE SHOULD EXIST SO STOP DRAWING AND WRITING IT police.

I'm in a couple, and I slash anyway. Haters gonna etc.

Perhaps I'm just in different fandoms but I've never seen "slash can't exist, het is the only way with this character."

Try Bleach, where slash pairings are automatically considered crack pairings by the raging het shippers who make so much noise with their non-canonical pairing wars that just looking at it on the surface, you might not even notice that the Bleach fandom has a very thriving slash side.

[identity profile] t-funster.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, this. This is pretty much the reason the only contact I have with the Bleach fandom is making fanmixes. I have a bunch of het OTPs in the series, but my two favorite ones are, indeed, slash, and it pisses me off that nobody actually take them seriously. Which is very very irrational, since there's no canon ship in Bleach, except the married people nobody remembers.

[identity profile] delwynmarch.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
it pisses me off that nobody actually take them seriously

Your fellow shippers probably do ;) But it sure can be hurtful when you dare mention your slash ships in some of the biggest communities and get told that "that's not a REAL ship, just a crack one" :/

There are exactly three canon ships in Bleach: Byakuya/Hisana, Isshin/Masaki, and Kaien/Miyako. All het, sure - all dead, too, since one or both partner in these pairings is dead. Which means that everyone writing a pairing which isn't one of these three (that is, 99.9% of fandom, het, slash and femslash alike) is writing a non-canonical pairing. And yet, listening to some het shippers, you'd think that Bleach is actually about canon romance between the main characters. Right T.T

[identity profile] t-funster.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Good god, how good it is to see a fellow Bleach fan who's with the mind on the right place! Exactly! I get really pissed lurking in the fandom because they actually believe with all their heart that Bleach is all about IchiRuki, IchiHime and, IDK, GinRan. It isn't. None of those ships are canon (and if you ask me, the only thing that remotelly makes sense is that Orihime and Rangiku have feelings for Ichigo and Gin, but it doesn't make any of those ships canon, just one-sided), and, hopefully, they'll never be. I have plenty of ships, but Bleach is about fellowship, mostly. And even the biggest het ships are this: Friendship.

[identity profile] delwynmarch.livejournal.com 2011-07-07 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* People don't believe me when I say that I keep running into Bleach fans who get scared away or disgusted by the constant Ichi-ship wars...

Don't lose heart, though: the fandom is not comprised entirely of said warring fans. There are slash shippers, and true crack shippers who have fun inventing the most unbelievable ships just for the fun of it, and of course reasonable het shippers who don't think het is automatically best or that their het ships are any more likely to become canon than any given slash ship - and even gen fans! The problem is just that there is no really centralised playground for all those fans, so you have to go around, and make friends with people, who will introduce you to their groups of like-minded friends and so on.

Also, I do suggest you take a look at [livejournal.com profile] capslock_bleach if you haven't yet. The place shares some mods with The Place That Shall Not Be Named, but the atmosphere is radically different: much more relaxed, very few sacred cows if any, and a general desire not to take themselves seriously. You might like it there and/or find some like-minded fans :) ?

[identity profile] t-funster.livejournal.com 2011-07-07 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'll have a look there, because I really really love Bleach and I also love making fanwork for it, but what the fandom usually shows for the fellow lurker fan is kinda scarry. I'll be happy to see more fans like you!

[identity profile] oohasparklie.livejournal.com 2011-07-05 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never seen a het fan act like that. Maybe I hang out in the more mature areas of fandom, though.
