I'm only fluent in English, and there are a number of non-English musicals I love and of which I live in terror of a future bad English translation. But I'm frightened by the potential for those translations to suck, not out of any principle, to be honest. Poor translations can kill music, just kill it. I've seen some great, absolutely wonderful English translations of non-English musicals, so I know it isn't completely hopeless. But the potential for suck is immense.

Haha, I can agree with this - the few songs that have been translated into English from my favourite musical (Elisabeth) have such godawful lyrics that it just kills the whole thing, as you said. (Not to mention Romeo et Juliette, whose English translation DID kill the whole thing - basically.)

So yeah, it really depends on the translation. I am all for translation, because each new libretto can be just as wonderful as the first and leads to a whole new sector of people enjoying great shows.

Oh, man, did they actually translate Romeo et Juliette? I'm glad I haven't caught wind of it yet. I remember what was done with Starmania; the resulting Tycoon wasn't just mediocre translation, it was the style changes that made it particularly awful.

Thanks for reccing Elisabeth, I hadn't heard of it yet!
