I thought it was understood with them that quality wasn't the goal, but rather maximum fappage potential for the creepy fans who obsess over them and buy all their albums six times and choose one special member as their future spouse.

Why feel bad for them when I doubt they feel bad for themselves :P Speaking for SNSD I can agree not all of them are the very best at singing and/or dancing, but they all bring something to the group. This is true of pretty much...almost every kpop group regardless of size. Idol groups also need to have varied personalities and variety sense, so members who might 'lack' in musical talents tend to shine in those areas.

I'm not a huge SNSD fan, but that's the deal with idol groups in general. Not everyone is the best singer, but they all bring something; dancing, acting, different personalities, etc.

That's why they're idol groups and not music groups.

The best thing about these groups though is that every member has something different to offer. For example with SNSD, there are 5 members (Taeyeon, Tiffany, Jessica, Sunny, and Seohyun) who are talented at singing, 2 members (Hyoyeon and Yuri) who are good dancers, 1 actress (Yoona), and 1 who has an awesome personality and is always entertaining on variety shows (lol it sounds like I'm saying that I didn't know what to say about her but if you see her on variety shows you'll understand her role in the group :P)

Plus SuJu and SNSD's choreography looks so cool because they have many members and they all dance in perfect sync with each other. The first time I saw the dance versions of Gee and Sorry Sorry my mind was totally blown XD

Exactly. These groups are a lot about being idol personalities and entertainers, as opposed to being all about the music. Hell, only about 3 members of SJ can even sing well. It's no secret.


Anyways, anyone who thinks pop music is only about musical talent is fooling themselves. So much of it is about image and entertainment. And I'm saying this as a fan of pop music.

It's because they're considered idol groups; they're not music groups. Their main purpose is to do live events and variety shows, with music not the absolute 100% top priority all the time.

Though one of the groups with the most members, AKB48 (which currently actually has 58 members, with more trainee members)does have a choir-like song, Sakura no Shiori

'Tis true. Hate!secrets make one curious about the subject of hate, which leads to further research to see what's so bad about said subject and BOOM you're hooked. :D I personally didn't get hooked into SNSD fandom from their music videos...more for their adorakable, fun personalities. xD Although I do loooove their music a whole lot. ♥ I really didn't think I could love ANY girl group until I discovered SNSD...I was more into boy groups before them (well...mostly Japanese boy groups but still). :P

I thought it was typical affair for any pop group (be it from Asia, Europe, North America, or elsewhere) for at least one of the members to be the "pretty face" that draws in pre-pubescent fans, but is only marginally talented. :/

Why does it matter how many people are in a band? Or what they look like for that matter?

What matters is the sound. Are their songs any good? Are the lyrics memorable? Are the tunes catchy? If so, they can be a 50 piece brass band, or two fat 60 somethings with guitars for all I care. My Ipod doesn't discriminate.

IDK it's been a few months and I still haven't learned all of SuJu's names. I haven't even started on SNSD yet.

I also don't much about their individual singing/dancing talents, but SuJu do other things like host tv and radio shows and perform in dramas and model and such.

At first I didn't really like the fat one, whatever his name is, because I'm not a huge fan of rapping. But now I love him, he's hilarious.
