Maybe it's just the former choir kid in me... but I've never understood why, if they want to have a dozen plus people in a bamd, they can't just make it a damn choir. throw in some musicians on top for extra bodies, even.

It's because they're considered idol groups; they're not music groups. Their main purpose is to do live events and variety shows, with music not the absolute 100% top priority all the time.

Though one of the groups with the most members, AKB48 (which currently actually has 58 members, with more trainee members)does have a choir-like song, Sakura no Shiori

So they aren't really bands, they are theatre troupes: a kind of modern version of vaudeville, doing skits and dance numbers and juggling and the like. That makes a lot more sense. As bands I couldn't see the appeal-- the music is so low priority, but as a modern roaming troupe, with each member doing their own act, as it were, I can see it.

That's actually pretty close to it, actually. One of the groups I love from this genre, AKB48, perform almost daily (though since they're THE most popular music-related act in Japan right now, it's kind of hard for them to) in a very small theater in Tokyo. They meet fans after shows and at events as well. And on one of their variety shows, AKBingo!, while they do often have a performance from one of the music singles/albums that might becoming out around that time, most of the show is really focused on the girls doing various things. Last week one of them learned how to unicycle and another learned magic, and they often play funny games that are really fun to watch.

The music is there, and they do perform a lot of concerts and the like, but the people who perform it aren't really artists, and that's not their priority. I don't know about KPop, but in Japan a lot of these idol groups are considered stepping stones for future careers, even if the group is ridiculously popular. For example, on shows they're often asked what they want to do in the future and some say they want to be singers, even though that's really what they're doing now.

It's kind of an interesting system, and I really can't think of much like it that's not in Japan or Korea.

I think the west does it more with comedy than with music. Shows like Saterday Night Live and The Daily Show and Letterman -- Where you get a bit of music, and a bunch of talents, a reliable main group that you can learn the names of, plus guest stars. And it's a launching platform for later careers.

Music in the west seems to be mostly about music. Boybands seem to have gone largely out of style in favor of "American Idol" and single personality pop bands. But even when they were in style, they were still mostly about the singing.

Though I'm not a big fan of j-pop girl groups, I have to give them a lot of respect, especially AKB48. I used to kinda hate that group, but since I found a song of theirs that I truly love ("Beginner") and have read positive fan accounts regarding their performances, I gotta give them a lot of credit. Plus, they're totally dominating in the Japanese music charts at the moment. Even beating the juggernaut that is Arashi. lol
I don't know, AKB48's concept just fascinates me...and I love how the ones in charge of the group really know how to cater to the fans and keep them engaged. After School seems to be doing the same thing, taking lots of inspiration from AKB48 as well as Morning Musume. :)

Yeah, I know. But surely it's not impossible to find ten or twenty pretty, charismatic girls who can dance and are decent at singing as a group? Or maybe my standards for the first three are just lower than for the latter one. Heh.
