I'm not convinced, OP. I think a lot of people who're disappointed with her outfit change are upset because they're fans of Ashley, not because they're haters.

And I happen to agree with the people who're disappointed with tough-as-nails Ashley suddenly running around in a Miranda-catsuit with a Miranda-hairdo and a Miranda-pushup bra.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Dressing in a more traditionally "attractive" manner does not make you any less 'tough'. The issue is the impracticality of cat suits and thin armor. The comments about her bra and hair are in bad taste.

Miranda was not made a lesser character due to her hair or tits. They're attributes of appearance and if Ashley or Miranda decide to look that way then fine, its their own damn business. If she was a guy getting am appearance reboot this would not be an issue and everyone fucking knows it. Take your slut-shaming elsewhere.

[identity profile] specimen-47.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
That would actually be appropriate if Ashley was a real person making those choices for herself, and not, you know, a fictional woman figure in a science-fiction story whose makeover is decided by mostly men, in a video-game that has thus far been geared/advertised mostly towards men.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. Thank you. This is basically the response I've always wanted to make to people who talk about the 'slut-shaming' of fictional characters (whose designs are intended to pander to straight male fans).

Exactly. May I also add that, trying to make Ashley a pseudo-Miranda is hardly empowering towards Ashley's character. It's as bad if they tried to pseudo-Ashley up Miranda.

[identity profile] whak-hat.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks impractical for battle, in the least. The designers should have been forced to run in a short skirt with thigh high boots in a long wig. That way they'd understand that all these things combined = dead soldier. Leaving a pretty corpse won't help the fight much.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm one of those poor PS3 fans who didn't get the first game, but I can kinda' see why people would be upset, because that looks nothing like the woman I saw on Horizon.

...They kinda' sexed Kaidan up a bit too though, imo.

[identity profile] neaira.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't really do much to Kaidan.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't they? He always looked kind of plain to me in the stills, whereas in the ME3 promos he's got more chiseled features. Maybe I just saw bad pics of him, then. Didn't they give him stubble and some grey hairs? I don't remember those from before, and he definitely has them now.

[identity profile] neaira.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, I am a die hard Kaidan fangirl. I have loved him since ME1 came out. They tweaked him a bit, and it looks like he's aged a bit with the salt and pepper hair, but honestly he doesn't look that different to me.

I'm a huge Ashley fan, and the changes upset me because they're not true to her character. Why does she suddenly have impractical supermodel hair and a form-fitting catsuit as 'armor.' (The image with the pic is DLC armor, I think; admittedly better than the blue catsuit, but she's still essentially wearing a dress, tights, and thigh-high boots--just 'armor-like.')

As a huge fan of strong female characters, and of consistent writing and characterization, it disappoints me that Bioware seems to be trying to sex Ash up to make up for her lack of popularity in the fan base. I've loved Ash since she started quoting poetry and talking about her family with me in the Normandy cargo bay, and I'm hurt and saddened that they're doing this to her.

I agree, Ashley's new look really does smack of trying to repeat Miranda's popularity. Want to make a female character wildly popular? Slap her in a catsuit and give her full, bountiful hair! ......and some full, bountiful boobs won't hurt, either.

I think this article (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Stripperiffic) on TV Tropes really summarizes it well. Ashley starts off as the woman on the left...

Image

...and becomes the woman on the right. How are fans of Ashley not supposed to notice that and feel sad?

[identity profile] shady-fetish.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
When I first saw a pic in Game Informer, I honestly thought it was Miranda. I was gobsmacked when I found out it was Ashley's makeover.

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I have to agree that it's the sexualization of a character whose prior characterization is that she doesn't want to be seen as a sexual object - one of the earliest things she says is a comment about how she doesn't do that sort of thing for just anyone. And now, it's her standard attire.

I haven't been up in arms about it, given that my philosophy is always wait and see when it comes to unreleased products, but even then, I'm really not liking the direction that Ashley's design is taking for ME3. What would be right for her character is having her dress like a soldier, period. I hope that there's a character based reasoning for it, but frankly, I'm concerned that there won't be, that she's been redesigned just to make her visually appeal to the people who, to date, hate her character because of her religion/views on aliens.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I take the perspective that it's all BS until release day. I just don't see the point in going ballistic over development work and games "journalism." I'd prefer her in heavy armor but those pics don't strike me as being in the same league as Miranda/Jack/Samara/Morinth.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta admit, OP, I agree with you 100%. I am just so tired of the whole debate. Sure, I would have vastly preferred her in heavy armor, but man, I can't bring myself to care anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think the images we have seen with her in that outfit were to get the fanboys going. They already announced she also wears awesome armor. We just haven't seen it yet. Crossing my fingers that it's not some BS.

[identity profile] neaira.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can believe Ash is a girly girl at heart because of the pink armor, but she's way too practical to wear that shit to battle.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I always run at least one mission with m!shep in the pink armor just for kicks. But the pink stuff usually gets swapped out eventually because it's just not that good in terms of stats.

[identity profile] neaira.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that default armor gets obsolete pretty quick in ME1. I like having Sheploo run around in pink armor in ME2, though.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
She IS getting actual armor-armor, y'know.

But seriously? People are surprised at this? I think in the first game she was very defensive and eager to prove that she was just as good as her male peers. But underneath that was a girl who gushed to her sister about how cute Kaidan is, wears pink on her armor, and has poetry memorized.

Maybe she's matured, come into herself a bit, and realized she can embrace her feminine side and still kick ass and get respect?

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, never cared. But this is likely because I let her die because I think she's pretty boring.

[identity profile] paopaotang.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sick of this discussion. The issue is always contorted into "sexualization". How fucking long is fandom going to interpret every single female character who dresses in a "sexy" way or wears a short skirt as the gaming industry saying, "We are trying to make this character popular by making her boobs hang out." That interpretation in of itself is sexism. I don't care if that is actually what was intended, the issue is that a female character in a video game should be able to decide to wear whatever the fuck she wants (keeping practicality in mind) without being garnering this shitstorm I see every time Ashley's new appearance comes up. The size of your tits or your hair style does not hinder your ability to kick ass.

Also, she's getting armor anyway. This is an Alt appearance. I couldn't give less of a shit.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-13 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that female characters don't 'choose' anything. They're just fictional characters. In fact, their character designs are a deliberate choice by the people responsible for creating the game. I think it's kind of disingenuous to pretend that the intentions of the character designers don't count for anything.
