I'm not convinced, OP. I think a lot of people who're disappointed with her outfit change are upset because they're fans of Ashley, not because they're haters.

And I happen to agree with the people who're disappointed with tough-as-nails Ashley suddenly running around in a Miranda-catsuit with a Miranda-hairdo and a Miranda-pushup bra.

Dressing in a more traditionally "attractive" manner does not make you any less 'tough'. The issue is the impracticality of cat suits and thin armor. The comments about her bra and hair are in bad taste.

Miranda was not made a lesser character due to her hair or tits. They're attributes of appearance and if Ashley or Miranda decide to look that way then fine, its their own damn business. If she was a guy getting am appearance reboot this would not be an issue and everyone fucking knows it. Take your slut-shaming elsewhere.

That would actually be appropriate if Ashley was a real person making those choices for herself, and not, you know, a fictional woman figure in a science-fiction story whose makeover is decided by mostly men, in a video-game that has thus far been geared/advertised mostly towards men.

THIS. Thank you. This is basically the response I've always wanted to make to people who talk about the 'slut-shaming' of fictional characters (whose designs are intended to pander to straight male fans).

[identity profile] specimen-47.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
to be honest, it took someone else making that point about a different character for me to "get" it, so I don't blame anon (and others) for missing the point... I want so desperately to believe that a fictional character can be sexual and empowered, but at some point there's a line in which the character is being demeaned in an obvious way by her "creators" in order to pander to the (male) audience. It can certainly look like slut-shaming to those who don't want to acknowledge the extent of writers/designers/developers' responsibility, and it might be easier to talk about if you maybe take that into consideration?

Exactly. May I also add that, trying to make Ashley a pseudo-Miranda is hardly empowering towards Ashley's character. It's as bad if they tried to pseudo-Ashley up Miranda.

It looks impractical for battle, in the least. The designers should have been forced to run in a short skirt with thigh high boots in a long wig. That way they'd understand that all these things combined = dead soldier. Leaving a pretty corpse won't help the fight much.
