Well you sound positively charming.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
But if you beta for them, you could help them improve. It's all about how you phrase your comments.

Who knows, with the proper encouragement, your friend could become a great writer.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, OP. I can understand not wanting to beta someone's fic because you're too busy, or even if they write a pair/kink you don't care for and you don't want to read it. But to simply write off the other person's work while acting like "oh, well, keep commenting and saying how wonderful my obviously superior fic is" just makes you sound like an asshole.

You probably weren't Shakespeare when you started out either, OP. Grow up.

I'm willing to go out on a limb and say OP is still not Shakespeare, and probably never will be. And that there are more talented writers thinking the exact same things about OPs work, but who are probably kind enough not to say those things out loud.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't lie and say that these aren't the kind of thoughts some of us find fleeting through our minds on occasions, but perhaps I am naive in thinking that remorse inevitably follows.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Pfft, are you me anon? I have a friend in a different fandom, who continues to write mediocre fic but who wants me to read it and comment on it for her. The problem is that she posts it on crappy sites like deviantArt and ff.net, so she gets good feedback on it, mostly because it's from 14-year old girls who wouldn't know good fic if it bit them in the ass, so she doesn't think that anything is wrong with it. And any criticism she gets, she laughs off as someone trying to troll her. I wish she would just realize how boring and predictable it is and stop all together. She wonders why I won't read it, I guess I just need to get the balls to tell her that it's bad.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Plus fucking one. I've betaed for enough fanbrats who were decent enough people but couldn't take criticism at all that no, I am not going to try to help them improve. They can flounder around thinking they're awesome for all I care, but I'm not wasting my time anymore.

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
This problem is everywhere.
My generation was brought up with this "EVERYONE'S A [TALENTED] WINNER" bullshit (at least at the schools I've went to, blah) and if someone tries to give crit it's simply because ~someone's out to get you~.
And now it's impossible to even get crit. I am drawing/writing this thing and I can clearly see places where it's screwed up. Why are these people complimenting it? Why can't they point out more crap so I can improve further?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
ugh this this this!
my elementary school started bringing in the "everyone's a winner" thing a few years before i left for junior high. in fifth grade i remember making a poster for a project that took me days to complete. i drew most of the pictures myself (i must admit, i was a pretty good at drawing at the time), i rewrote all the info in my own words, i made it as bright and colorful as i could so that it attracted attention...and i got a B- for it. meanwhile there was a kid in class who rarely did his work, and he ended up getting an A+ for his poster despite the fact it was 2 photocopied pages from the Encyclopedia taped (with sticky tape) onto poster paper. i was so pissed off. when i asked the teacher about it she said he deserved the A+ because that was "good work, for him". grrrr.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've thought these thoughts.

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Or, she's having fun and that's all she cares about. You don't have to read her stuff, but she doesn't have to stop, just because you don't like it.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
If you really don't want to read their stuff, don't read it, but there's no need to act like an asshole about it.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what's worse, the contents of this secret or what it's on. I could hardly read the damn thing.

Just stopping by to say I love your icon~

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! <3

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I won't lie and say that thoughts of such a nature have not briefly flown through my head, but it is not at all constructive to focus on them, OP!

Your friend's writing may be tedious to beta(in which case maybe you should stop as it doesn't seem to be making you happy), but I am sure that you did not spring from your father's head fully formed writing eloquent multichapter fic, either.

Besides, I would love to beta someone's imperfect work. Your friend trusts you to point out what's wrong, and what's right, and what can be better. The reason they want a beta in the first place is because they are /aware that they can improve as a writer/ with your help.

It sounds like you and your friend don't have a very good arrangement going on right now, though, so maybe you should tell them to please find a new beta.

Also get off your high horse about your own fic! it is very silly to be so absorbed in your own work.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I keep trying to read this, but my eyes won't stop bleeding.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, are you a precious little selfish asshole?

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
And you don't have the stones to tell them this in person? Or in PM if you don't actually know them irl?

Meh.

[identity profile] melissasbrain.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I want to say you're a total asshole, and yet these are your thoughts, and you shouldn't be blamed for having thoughts.

... But seriously, I dare you to actually say this shit to the person's face. Not because I want you to act like an asshole and hurt someone's feelings, but because I think this person deserves to know what kind of individual you are so that he/she doesn't have to deal with you anymore.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Another secret I can't see.
