Though if you're talking about the fans who say it's the best show ever, I'd say yeah that IS overrated.

I would not claim Firefly was the best sci fi show ever, honestly I don't really have an answer for "best sci fi show ever" though.

But those others? UMMM... I think you and I have far different tastes, sorry. I do love Farscape to death, but I think I love Farscape and Firefly on equal ground and for two entirely different sets of reasons.

But those others I could not really stand to watch for a second. Not to be insulting, but your taste is not everyone else's taste.

I think a lot of people build the show up a lot on all the potential that it could have had, and never got a chance to realize. I kind of doubt it would have the fan following it does if it weren't cancelled as well.

Uh...I'm with you on it not being the best sci-fi show ever (I really have too many that I like equally to say that), but...it kinda says something about your taste that one of your favorites is "Farscape". I mean, totally entertaining, but "best"? I dun think so...No wonder you didn't like Firefly, it's too serious and based slightly on reality!

I didn't really enjoy what I saw of Babylon 5 and it's not the same tone as Firefly, but I do usually encourage people to check out Farscape if they're a fan of Firefly.

I agree. I love Firefly, but yeah it's not the be all and end all of scfi television. Though, I'd say anything with that devoted a fandom is probably overrated, just the nature of the beast. I know the things I love probably aren't as wonderful as I think they are. XD

I really love Firefly, the relationships between the characters and the humor was really what made it.

But to me it was more of a space western than a sci fi I guess. So I think for that reason I wouldn't call it my favorite sci fi series.

Agreed. Firefly may have grown into being one of the best, based on the quality of its 14 episodes, but we'll never know. Whedon can be great, but he's also very uneven, not to mention he's more than capable of getting bored and letting his creations go to ruin (e.g. Buffy S6 & S7, and we won't even get into the comics). What we do have is pretty awesome, but still just set-up.

To the people dissing Babylon 5--up until about six months ago, I was one of you. It took me six years and about four tries to get through S1. This last time I stuck with it though, and after a certain point, I found myself compulsively watching episode after episode. I still didn't think it was that great, but I needed to know what happened next. By S3, everything had just clicked into place and I couldn't believe how good it was. It's got some huge flaws, but it's also the only series of its length I've ever seen where the mystery-arc actually played out in such a logical beginning, middle and end. It really is like watching a televisual novel play out, even with the relatively awkward S5.

I don't blame anyone who can't get past the dodgy effects, sometimes cheesy dialogue and rather static visuals, but this series was truly groundbreaking for its time and in some ways remains unsurpassed.

I just got done watching the series with my husband a few weeks ago. I'm still thinking about it. I actually saw the movie before the series so I didn't understand at the time, but yeah...it was a good series.

It started out kind of rough but as it went on it was really good. I like to think of the movie as a summary of 'season 2' hehe. I could see that whole arc and other episodes in the non-existent second season.

I think I like it more than other sci-fi shows because it's more of a space cowboy show than sterile space show. I've heard good things about Babylon 5 and the like so I may check them out.

I love it to DEATH, but I think a lot of the praise just comes from the short-lived part. There is no doubt in my mind that there would've been a backlash (probably of the It's Popular Now It Sucks variety) eventually if it had lasted much longer, it's just that it never got there and therefore seems kinda perfect forever.

I think some people take Firefly fandom too far, yes. I wouldn't say it was "teh gratest sci-fi show eva!" because it was never given the opportunity. Which is what I think a lot of the fandom gets angry about. It could've been great and had the potential, but unfortunately it didn't get the chance. That's life. :/
