Re: Really?

And I'm fucking sick and tired of people taking umbrage at something that has NOTHING whatsoever to do with actual point of the original secret!!!

The OP is making an analogy to describe how much he or she dislikes the way SPN is going, and using a comparison to a psychosis or to Schizophrenia or whatever the hell else crazy, insane, loonie, whacked, lunatic, or insane phrase the OP used to make the point seems perfectly apt with me!

If you have a crazy person in your family or you have a crazy, skitzo friend, or you yourself have been diagnosed, that's a sin and a shame, but for god's sake GET SOME HELP or something, and stop finding offense where none is meant.

that's a sin

LOL what?

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
shhh. It's just an expression.

Re: Really?

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard that before.

Re: Really?

You have if you've ever watched Disney's Beauty and the Beast "It's a pity and a sin/She doesn't quite fit in."

Re: Really?

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but they're also implicitly blaming her with that line, so if that's the connotation, I return to my: "Really?"

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Umm... Not really, I think you're reading way too much into it.

Re: Really?

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
When someone says "it's a sin" I think it generally implies a sin against you, the person with the problem. I.e., it's an unfortunate thing that has been done to you to cause this.

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-16 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Same Anon as above

Basically the expression is another way of saying "it's a shame." It might be sad/wrong, but with no blame inherent in the statement.

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of a generational thing, I think. I know where I live anyway all the little old ladies like to say "Oh that's such a sin" whenever they hear any bad news. It basically means that it's a shame and you feel bad about whatever happened.

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Analogy: a similarity between like features of two things on which a comparison may be based.

So do parse this analogy for me, please. How does this show resemble bipolar disorder? Or schizophrenia? I'm impressed it manages both, so I'd love to learn how.

Or was the OP just using thoughtless modifiers that OP thought semantically equal to bad, weird, off-putting, whatever?

Because that would be, forgive me, so gay. (That's an analogy!)

Is that, uh, APT with you?

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
This. I try not to overreact to mental-illness-as-metaphor but it doesn't even make much sense here.

Re: Really?

(Anonymous) 2011-07-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
So....I'll take a stab. SPN is all over the place, without a plan or a clue or anyone at the helm. Kinda like a person with a mental disorder like schizophrenia. As in, LOOONEY TUNEs and making no sense at all.

Re: Really?

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, and I agree that the phrasing was poorly chosen, but I can see how the analogy might appear appropriate to someone with a limited understanding of mental illness. Frankly, it's pretty obvious if you think about the show, and the most well-known symptoms/characteristics of the mentioned disorders.

The show (IMO) has been extremely disorganized, with little regard for the established 'rules' of its own universe, and the plotlines have been wildly varying both in terms of content and tone. If you take "schizophrenic" to mean "out of touch with reality" and "bipolar" to mean "back and forth between two extremes" the analogy works.

First of all, it shows that they fundamentally misunderstand the what schizophrenia and bipolar even are. What the hell does mania, mood swings or hallucinations have to do with anything? If OP had used "crazy" instead I wouldn't have found that offensive, because we all know what that word means in a colloquial sense and as someone who actually has bipolar, I'm not offended by the popular use of the term "crazy". But to use "bipolar" or "schizophrenic" so flippantly as adjectives for something that clearly has nothing to do with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia just makes you look totally ignorant.

In any case, you are probably another troll and I am most likely wasting my time.

Re: Really?

[identity profile] yahalomay.livejournal.com 2011-07-15 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The point is that the analogy is offensive, like when people say "That's so lame" or "that's so retarded".
