Seriously. If she's a Mary Sue, what exactly does that make Harry?

Pfft. Didn't you get the memo that we're now calling it a "Harry-Stu" in honor of what a Gary-Stu he was?

Well, when boys are special they "the hero" and when girls are special they are Mary Sues, so.

Seriously, this.

Yeah, no.

I'd expect Harry Potter to be the hero of a series of stories called Harry Potter, and for the adventures and situations he faces in those stories to cause him to develop stereotypically heroic traits. That's not because he's a boy, it's because he's the focal point of the series. Your statement, on the other hand, is nothing but troll-y generalisation.

(I don't think Ginny was a Sue, for the record. I just think she was a badly written character with an abysmally written relationship with Harry.)

I'm not speaking about Harry Potter specifically. My point is that the word "Mary Sue" gets thrown around all the time, usually because the female character is deemed "too special" by someone for whatever reason -- she's too pretty, she's too smart, she's too capable, what makes her so special?, etc. This rarely ever happens with male characters, and the existence of that one Star Trek character everyone trots out as a "Gary Stu" does not change that fact. It's a shitty term because it's become a shorthand way of dismissing a female character without having to back it up.

Boring?
