Dude. A mental illness is a bad thing. If it were a good thing, people wouldn't be trying to fix them, would they?

Admittedly there are better ways to describe the directionless plot of SPN in the past few seasons, but of all the groups to offend, at least they picked one with an actual negative trait. :|

THIS. People shouldn't be made to feel bad about their illnesses, but there's a reason that they're considered ILLNESSES that can be MEDICATED, or at least treated with therapy. People use it as an excuse ALL the time to not do anything about their problems, and then make the lives of everyone around them difficult.

Yeah man
Those schizophrenics are so difficult, using the fact that they have delusional thought processes as an excuse to not doing anything about their problems

da I think the point was that there are so many people trying to convince everyone they're fine just the way they are, and so people with real problems who actually do need help have convinced themselves that they don't. Which...seems like a reasonable statement to me. :\

I bet plenty of them know that and are getting help and dealing just fine, and then they still have to deal with their condition as a derogatory word, and have to keep their condition utterly to themselves because people don't understand what it means and view them as subhuman if they find out.

I really, really don't see the difference between using specific conditions as negative terms and using words like retarded.

Re: Really?

Well, for schizophrenia in particular, it's defining characteristic is that people don't perceive reality as it actually is, so no, I bet a lot of people don't know they have it. I do get your point, but I'm still of the mindset that it isn't as bad of an insult as a gendered or ablest term. As someone mentioned before, "cancerous" is a perfectly acceptable descriptive term, and saying something is "schizophrenic" is a pretty condensed way to say jumbled and without direction with undertones of abstract from reality. :\

da

If people don't know they have it and aren't seeking help, then that sucks, but I don't think many people are not seeking help because they know something is wrong but people are telling them they should just accept themselves the way they are. Not wanting something to be used as a slur =/= saying it's not negative.

As for the rest of it, I think there are way better ways to say that, especially considering all the ways in which people misunderstand the word schizophrenic already.

but I don't think many people are not seeking help because they know something is wrong but people are telling them they should just accept themselves the way they are.

Or they just don't have access to health care and can't get the meds they need. Schizophrenia isn't like mood disorders, it's universally accepted as a serious mental illness, not a "state of mind" or whatever

You sound really ignorant TBH -- do you know how many people in the US are homeless because they have schizophrenia that goes undiagnosed?
