Wow why's everyone being so harsh to OP? Yes, perhaps OP should have called the suicide hotline. But the suicide hotline isn't a magical "cure all" that would have suddenly saved her friend from her depression. A lot of the time the suicide hotline does nothing and the person goes through with their suicide anyway. Who's to say that would have helped the matter at all?

OP thought what he/she was doing was the right thing to do. It might have been a silly thing to do, but for people who have never dealt with depression or suicide it can be a hard thing to understand or deal with.

+1 Not to mention that if they're listening to a band like that, they're probably young -- a teenager. And, TRAGICALLY, sometimes a suicide threat is mistaken for a cry of attention. People do it all the time. PROFESSIONALS make that mistake all the time. People are being way harsh on this OP who wouldn't have the training to deal with it.
