That's just sad... get a life beyond a damn book series. I love book series (that aren't Harry Potter) and I have never lost my shit over the end of it.

Guess what? Things end! Book series, film series, TV shows... spoiler alert, LIFE FUCKING ENDS. One day, you will die and you won't get to re-read anything to make yourself feel better about it.

So get over it.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] shampayn.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
way to be a dick, i mean shit. there's no need to make someone feel ashamed for loving a series so much. we all know shit ends, it doesn't mean we can't be sad about it. i guess you never had a fandom mean so much to you.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You can be sad over the end of a series and, yes, I have had a series/fandom end that I miss immensely, but I didn't have a medical emergency over it and have to re-read the series to put myself under the illusion that the series wasn't really over.

Because the fact is that the Harry Potter you know and love to much is now done. Maybe JK Rowling will write something else in the Harry Potter world but it won't be the same series you grew up with. To re-read the seven books and try to pretend that it's not over is insane and stupid. You might as well stick your fingers in your ears and say 'La la la, I'm not listening! La la la, I'm not listening!'

Y'know, as harsh as you're being (and there's really no need for that...) I actually kind of agree. And this is coming from someone who has actually broke down in tears at the mere thought of my favorite show ending (this was six years ago. It's still on.)

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] shampayn.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
i'm pretty sure the only ones having medical emergencies over it are the ones who actually have mental disorders/other mental problems. everyone else is really just exaggerating.

and there is nothing wrong with re-reading or re-watching a series to make yourself feel better. we all know it's done and over, most of the fanbase is adults, and while some people are freaking out, most of us are handling it like adults and are accepting of it being over. the series is gonna live on in our memory and it's not gonna disappear. people just say and do stupid shit when they're really sad.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-16 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh most of the fanbase are in their mid-late teens or early adulthood.

My goodness. I do have a life beyond Harry Potter, thank you for the concern. That being said, I grew up with Harry from the age of six; it's definitely significant for me. While the whole hives thing is hilariously ridiculous, I'm the first to admit, it's a result of dealing with the end of my childhood which is a pretty big bummer and at least I now have a funny story to go with my sadness.

Your comment was aggressively mean for no apparent reason, but that's okay, I understand. You've had to live your life without the ~magic the rest of us shared and apparently you've come out worse because of it. I'm very sorry you missed out.

(Also, lol, read your comment above. Minor hives is hardly a medical emergency.)

AH THIS GIF, SO CUTE. I want it to show up every time I have a "OWNED YOU" moment.

For the record, I'm with you, and I think it's perfectly natural to have a stress-related reaction to the idea of childhood ending. The idea itself has led some people to go into a serious depression, so having mild hives that'll be easily fixed is not a big deal.

Nice try, man.

I gave Harry Potter a shot and it didn't dazzle me like the rest of you. And I am quite fine with that. I found other fandoms/series that did a lot more for me than Harry Potter ever did. So I guess I found a way to live without the 'magic' you're already going into withdrawl about.

I have a few friends who really enjoyed Harry Potter (books and films) and, while they are sad it's over, they are moving on with their lives, not re-reading the books in a desperate attempt to hang on to their childhoods.

Emergency or not, you still had a medical issue brought on by the fact that you can't imagine the end of Harry Potter. That's my point. Like all fandoms that come to the end of new canon material, it's been fun but it's time to let it go.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
The hives person wasn't in control of how their body would respond to the excitement, though. Your argument is invalid. I understand berating someone if they, like, stopped eating or going outside or something because they're in control of that, but hives can just be the body's response to stress and the person isn't in any control over that. =/

It's a little presumptuous that you would condescend to tell a complete stranger on the internet, while being anon no less, when it's time for them to let go of something that is very near to their heart. You're absolutely right when it comes to new material, the books have finished and the films are out. They've given me a complete story that I adore and I don't need any more of, but you're very wrong if you think it's over. I re-read the series in its entirety once or twice a year, but it is by no means a way to 'hang on to my childhood.' I read them because I enjoy them and I can't imagine there will come a time when I won't. As long as I can still open the pages and be immersed in this world for a few hours any time I choose, it will never be over.

I see why you don't understand that, though. I'm glad you have things that you enjoy, but they seem to have an expiration date for you. Luckily I'll be able to go back to the Harry Potter series at my leisure and enjoy it for as long as I choose.

As for fandom, I've never participated in the HP fandom, I'm not really sure how strong it is, but as with most fandoms I would assume as long as there are people still interested, it will still exist.

such vitriol! maybe you need to get a life, too.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

Why do people always assume that if someone is very invested in a series or fandom, they have no life outside of that series or fandom? I really don't understand this mentality. It applies to a few people, sure, but there are plenty of functional, well-adjusted people with a social life whose downtime is almost completely devoted to a certain series or fandom.

IA. It's baffling to me that this stereotype still exists.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] shampayn.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
i totally agree with you on this.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-16 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'll take a stab it's because there are a lot of people who really don't have that much free time outside of work and school. It's get up, go to work and/or school, come home and sleep. It leaves little time for social life and devoted fandom (as opposed to casually dabbling in memes and discussion). It gives the impression that if you spend a lot of time in fandom then you must be devoting all your spare time to it and sacrificing an outside social life. Obviously it's not the case as different people work different hours, but I'd say those are the exceptions and not the rule.

finally someone said it. internet high five.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

Because this is the impression these kinds of hysterics give off. People who post they are ill or depressed or whatever else because of a book/movie, there are other people who will think they have issues. Don't want to see it posted, don't post that a movie has made you feel your life is over. You being general you, not the OP of this comment. There are people online who do have a life outside fandoms and there are those who do not. The vast majority of people are not in fandom in this world, fandom is a small % of those who surf the net.

People do think it's an over reaction and people do think there is something wrong with someone who can't cope and has a medical minor or not to a movie series ending. Social downtime for a hobby such as fandom is fine, that's why most of us are here. Complete hysterics and becoming depressed, bedridden or getting hives: they need help.

It's not healthy. The reason I am posting anon is, quite frankly, these people worry me. Far better to let them see what people really think of them and for me to post a note behind their name to stay far away from them so I know they have 'issues'.
