Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

My goodness. I do have a life beyond Harry Potter, thank you for the concern. That being said, I grew up with Harry from the age of six; it's definitely significant for me. While the whole hives thing is hilariously ridiculous, I'm the first to admit, it's a result of dealing with the end of my childhood which is a pretty big bummer and at least I now have a funny story to go with my sadness.

Your comment was aggressively mean for no apparent reason, but that's okay, I understand. You've had to live your life without the ~magic the rest of us shared and apparently you've come out worse because of it. I'm very sorry you missed out.

(Also, lol, read your comment above. Minor hives is hardly a medical emergency.)

AH THIS GIF, SO CUTE. I want it to show up every time I have a "OWNED YOU" moment.

For the record, I'm with you, and I think it's perfectly natural to have a stress-related reaction to the idea of childhood ending. The idea itself has led some people to go into a serious depression, so having mild hives that'll be easily fixed is not a big deal.

Pathetic response is pathetic.

I gave Harry Potter a shot and it didn't dazzle me like the rest of you. And I am quite fine with that. I found other fandoms/series that did a lot more for me than Harry Potter ever did. So I guess I found a way to live without the 'magic' you're already going into withdrawl about.

I have a few friends who really enjoyed Harry Potter (books and films) and, while they are sad it's over, they are moving on with their lives, not re-reading the books in a desperate attempt to hang on to their childhoods.

Emergency or not, you still had a medical issue brought on by the fact that you can't imagine the end of Harry Potter. That's my point. Like all fandoms that come to the end of new canon material, it's been fun but it's time to let it go.

The hives person wasn't in control of how their body would respond to the excitement, though. Your argument is invalid. I understand berating someone if they, like, stopped eating or going outside or something because they're in control of that, but hives can just be the body's response to stress and the person isn't in any control over that. =/

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] nexttwentylove.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
lol yes, this also. I wasn't like, 'You know what would be fun?!'

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

(different anon)

I'd argue that they have control of the stress by "sweating the small stuff" and indirectly brought them on. You have control over calming down and relaxing. You have control over what you choose to stress over about. They chose to stress out over the end of Harry Potter (which is ridiculous because it's been over technically for 3 years now) to the point of having a minor allergic reaction. Not a huge deal, but I daresay most people don't dwell on such trivial things. If it was indeed because of a fear of growing up and Harry Potter triggered it, then I will feel a little more sympathy. Only a little because I fear how they'll react when they actual have to grow old and deal with a mid-life crisis and not the end of their teens. We call that being a "drama queen."

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I only think "drama queen" applies to someone who broadcasts their stresses and makes a big deal of it publically. It seems like the hives person did the opposite: internalizing their emotion so much that their body responded with hives, and shared it with us because they found it entertaining and knew that they were overreacting. It didn't seem like the cry for attention that is usually associated with drama queens.

"You have control over calming down and relaxing. You have control over what you choose to stress over about."

Unrelated to HP for the most part but speaking as someone with pretty bad anxiety issues, it's not always this easy. Just because the rational part of one's brain is going, 'wow in the grand scheme of things this isn't a big deal, I shouldn't be stressing this much' doesn't mean that part is in control. Implying that a person should just 'lol get over it and calm down' is honestly not a fair statement to make, especially not knowing that person's history in the slightest. Just sayin'.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2011-07-16 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
On top of what other people said about it not always being that easy, it also sounds like really, they were stressing about the end of Harry Potter as it related to the bigger general stress of the end of childhood. Which, you know, IS stressful.

Re: Way too much fucking information ahead, fair warning.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-17 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
smh, if someone is so 'stressed' from seeing a movie they get hives, they need help. That is not normal, sorry. No matter how it's spun, they have issues.

Agree to disagree, I suppose.

It's a little presumptuous that you would condescend to tell a complete stranger on the internet, while being anon no less, when it's time for them to let go of something that is very near to their heart. You're absolutely right when it comes to new material, the books have finished and the films are out. They've given me a complete story that I adore and I don't need any more of, but you're very wrong if you think it's over. I re-read the series in its entirety once or twice a year, but it is by no means a way to 'hang on to my childhood.' I read them because I enjoy them and I can't imagine there will come a time when I won't. As long as I can still open the pages and be immersed in this world for a few hours any time I choose, it will never be over.

I see why you don't understand that, though. I'm glad you have things that you enjoy, but they seem to have an expiration date for you. Luckily I'll be able to go back to the Harry Potter series at my leisure and enjoy it for as long as I choose.

As for fandom, I've never participated in the HP fandom, I'm not really sure how strong it is, but as with most fandoms I would assume as long as there are people still interested, it will still exist.
