The word "friend" gets tossed around so much nowadays on all the social networking sites that people have completely lost track of its meaning. A friend is supposed to be more than someone who you talked to that one time and has an interest in this thing you also like. There's supposed to be an emotional connection. When you make your first friend when you're a little kid, it's like "fuck yeah, we can take over the world". You share secrets with your friend. Your best friend, you'd lie, cheat and steal for.

Instead it's just one of a thousand other names on a contact list. Friendship is completely anonymous now. You don't ever have to see your friend to have a complete relationship with them - you can just type back and forth with liberal use of smiley faces.

In the event that a (completely, without a doubt, for the purpose of conversation) straight person in such a social circle actually feels a deeper connection to someone of their own sex, and begins to consider a person as more than just a username to exchange words with, then I suspect that yeah, friendship would feel a hell of a lot like romance.

Hey, online friendship can actually be meaningful too. I moved to another state recently and so everybody I've known in person before is now an online friend. I haven't met my best friend in person yet, but I still get goofy at the thought of us taking over the world together, and I share secrets with her, and yeah, I'd lie, cheat, and steal for her. Friends who met online aren't always just facebook friends, where you add somebody and maybe make small talk with them a few times and then just assume you're "friends" because you're on each other's lists.

Mistaking friendship and romance is actually something I've had trouble with in the past, but. I'm very very gay and one of my really good friends is the opposite gender (he's a guy, I'm a girl) and while I do feel a very close connection to him, it feels completely different than liking someone romantically would. I don't know if I could ever crush on a guy, but if I ever did, and it felt more like how I think about a girl I'd think than how I'd think of a really close but never-ever-go-there guy friend... I don't know, it probably wouldn't happen, but I don't think it would just be mistaking any meaningful social connection for wanting to make out with someone's face.
